The Italian Navy during World War II The Second World War was a dramatic defeat for Italy and consequently for the Italian Navy.
Italians lacked totally from this point of view, all their airplanes were controlled by th Air Force which imposed to not build any carrier.
Italians countered the convoy with light units from Sicily, supported by air attacks and a cruiser division, near the island of Pantelleria with success this time: just 2 freighters survived of attacks and delivered their supplies to Malta.

The Italian Navy ships deployed in the Arabic Sea participate in the operations of control of merchant ships in transit to check loaded goods and crew, but they are not authorized to arrest people suspected of relation with Al Quaeda and the international terrorism.
The Italian ships, in particular the Frigate Zeffiro and the patroller Aviere, have the order to interrogate via radio the merchant ships in transit to verify the load, shipping and ports of origin and destination and they are authorized to board on the ships suspected also using force if reject to collaborate.
It is therefore, Italian government to not permit the Navy to arrest eventual suspected members of Al Quaeda, probably to avoid that the possible stop of some representative of the terroristic organization by the Italian troops could determine terroristic attacks against Italy.

On the plus side, the French Navy is accelerating the design of its next nuclear-powered submarine class so that the first may be included in the 2001 budget, but that same unit is still not planned to enter service until 2010.
The Italian Navy, however, plans to buy only two ships, and the British and French partners continue to squabble over many of the features of what promises to be an obsolescent design if and when the first unit is completed around 2005.

The Italian navy was accused last night of doing little to help shipwreck victims as more than 50 immigrants were feared drowned when their boat capsized in heavy seas off the southern coast of Sicily.
Mr Giacalone told the news agency Ansa that the Elide had asked the Italian navy fisheries protection vessel Cassiopea to take over the towing when it arrived on the scene, some 60 miles south of the island of Lampedusa.
Mr Giacalone said the fishermen had asked the navy to send a doctor by helicopter to assist one of the injured immigrants, only to be told to proceed to Lampedusa, where there was a hospital.

The 30th anniversary of the establishment of the Italian Navy 5th Helicopter Group was celebrated on October 28th at Maristaeli (Stazione Elicotteri della Marina) Luni, near La Spezia.
The static display was completed by two aircraft of neighbour Italian Coast Guard base: a Piaggio P.166-DL3 of the 1st Nucleo Aereo and an AB 412 in service with 1st Sezione Volo Elicotteri, both units being resident at the same Luni airport.

The Ministry of War and the Ministry of Culture in the Italian government came to an agreement for collaboration in the search of underwater archaeological sites, shipwrecks, the final agreement is planned to be signed in mid may of 1998.
The plan is to use all the navy capabilities, including the most advance techniques in sonars, ROV, submarines, etc., to make a complete catalog of the underwater patrimony of Italy, a country that, only in surface, compiles more than 50% of the officially catalogued World's Artistic Patrimony.
The main reason why this project of collaboration started is the discovery of a bronze statue of Eolo by a fisherman in Italian waters near Sicily in March of 1998.

"The overall Italian contribution to the reconstruction process in Iraq is mainly focused on the rehabilitation of essential public services and emergencies," said La Marte.
