ROME Aug 25, 2005 (AP)— Italy's Red Cross treated four Iraqi insurgents with the knowledge of the Italian government last year and hid them from U.S. forces in exchange for the freedom of two kidnapped aid workers, a top Italian Red Cross official said in an interview published Thursday.
Maurizio Scelli, the outgoing chief of the Italian Red Cross, told the Turin newspaper La Stampa that he kept the deal secret from U.S. officials, complying with "a nonnegotiable condition" imposed by Iraqi mediators who helped him secure the release of Italians Simona Pari and Simona Torretta.
Officials at the Italian Red Cross headquarters in Rome said Scelli was out of the office and could not be immediately contacted.

There were around 15 Italian Red Cross volunteers with some Iraqi Red Cross staff and we were to travel in convoy on the long and possibly dangerous journey to Najaf, taking much needed medical supplies and a lorry load of litre bags of water.
I spoke to one of the Italian doctors who told me there was nothing to be done for her here, but that she could go to the Italian Hospital in Medical City in Baghdad and receive treatment there free of charge.
The Italian doctor told her to come to Medical City in 6 months for an ultrasound scan - they would only be a problem if they moved or became bigger - in the meantime she was to drink lots and lots - the family had brought her x-rays for him to check.

The first plate for the Italian Red Cross was CRI 1 and was issued in Bergamo on August the 21st, 1911 (many thanks to Roberto Pola for this detail) and you can see it in the first picture (for the full photograph I took this detail from, go to the old photo gallery, picture 11).
The first CRI plates were square with two lines: the letters CRI and the red cross were on the top, while the number on the bottom: if the number had five digits, the first was placed on the top line (pictures number 2 and 3).
This CRI plate was painted in white directly on the bumper and didn't have the typical red cross that you see on normal CRI plates (picture number 24; the full image where I took this detail is available in the old photo gallery).

Italians paying ransoms of one kind or another, keeping it from the rest of the coalition because they are embarassed by it, and know the Americans(nor most others in the coalition) would not allow it.
