However there are still traditional sequences of images in which the common lineage is visible: for example, a moon is visible at the bottom left corner of the XXI in the picture at the top of the page.
This stems from confusion of German Mond with Italian mondo, meaning "world"—the usual symbol associated with the 21 in divinatory tarot.
In tarot decks made for playing the game (as opposed to those made for divination or other esoteric uses), the four Latin suits are replaced in many regions with the French suits of hearts, diamonds, clubs, and spades.

The deck in the Bibliothèque Nationale de France is a late-15th century hand-painted deck of the Northern Italian type (probably from Venice or Ferrara).
The early Italian Renaissance, which gave birth to the tarot, was a time of great intellectual diversity and activity.
The original Italian titles of the cards were in some cases different from the later French titles (and their English translations) that have become familiar to us through the Tarot de Marseille and its descendants.

During the 19th century, several fancy editions of the Tarock were issued; in most of these decks the traditional double illustrations of the trumps were replaced with city views.
The Cego Tarock may be considered a hybrid between the standard Tarock described above and the French Tarot.

It is clear that the (on average) 78 card deck was developed from early playing cards, because of the 56 cards that make up the "minor arcana".
These cards are divided into four suits that are identical to the Spanish and Italian decks; swords, cups, coins (or pentacles) and clubs (or wands).
While tarock decks have major and minor arcana like tarot decks do, the major arcana do not resemble the tarot's equivalent, and often tell stories of moralizing tales.

FAQ#2—What does the name Tarot mean?
For some reason the Italians began calling the deck Tarocchi, the name by which the cards (for games and fortune-telling) are still called in Italy today.
In Germany, for example, the name became Tarock (Tarocchi is pronounced hard—Tar-OK-Kee), in Hungary Tarokk and in France it became Tarot—although a number of variations on the spelling were used for some time before the final orthography was accepted.
It appears the Italians adopted the word only slightly altered (to an Italian form) from the Arabic, while the French supposedly dropped the hard k sound and went with taro, thus demonstrating they probably inherited the word from the Italians, but also suggesting they may have adopted the word as a variant of tare.
