  Aquila
Though air-minded Italy was thought to be an "unsinkable aircraft carrier", co-ordination between land-based air defense, land-based air reconnaisance, and the Fleet was poor at best, and in some ways the "cause" of several of the Regia Marina's defeats.
In "Grand Fleet" the Italians had been working with her training carrier Falco and the Fleet carrier Sagittario long enough to appreciate the significance of aircraft accompanying the Fleet, and was eagerly planning to convert ocean liners in the event of war.
Though slowed by the material and manpower demands of the war, the Aquila was ready for trials in mid-1942 and with the Littorio-class battleship Roma proudly joined the Regia Marina in January of 1943.

Italian Royal Navy in World War Two: carriers
Not even the Americans and, in some measure, not even the Japanese, that at the beginning of the war had the greater number of aircraft carriers, expected such result, and it is to be considered that their fleets were able to operate in the oceans, with immense spaces around himself.
To have had aircraft carriers would have been better also in the optical of the strike aircraft, torpedo bombers and bombers of dive, because their action would have been timely and without sad errors of identification.
All of this is to demonstrate the importance that had (and that have) the aircraft carriers in every fleet, and the fact Italy had to fight three years of naval war without these ships puts in evidence the deep unpreparedness in air-naval war of Regia Marina when it had to fight a modern war.

 Italian Carriers
The history of the Italian aircraft carriers is one of delayed decisions and postponed opportunities, confrontations, more or less transparent, between the Marina and the Aeronautica, and project after project, none of which was ever realized until the introduction of the Giuseppe Garibaldi in 1985.
The Italian war experience, from a naval viewpoint, was substantially limited to the Adriatic Sea with its short distances, which did not create the need for naval units such as the aircraft carrier.
Notwithstanding the evident opposition of the regime to the construction of aircraft carriers, the Regia Marina dedicated resources in support of studies and projects for the entire period preceding the conflict.

 Precision Guided Munitions
With this kind of accuracy, the need to operate mass flights of aircraft against a single aim point at last disappeared; it was as revolutionary a development in military air power terms as, say, the jet engine or aerial refuelling.
Though precision weapons deployed from aircraft, helicopters, battlefield missile systems, and ships and submarines off-shore undoubtedly offer a degree of leverage in warfare previously unknown, their cost is a serious concern, and one that must be addressed.
A case in point is that of the cruise missile, which carries a small and non-penetrating warhead and which is, once launched, incapable of being retargeted.
