The history of Italian cinema began just a few months after the Lumière brothers had discovered the medium, when Pope Leo XIII was filmed for a few seconds in the act of blessing the camera.
During the late 1970s and early 1980s, Italian cinema became internationall synonimous with violent horror films which were primarily produced for the video market and were credited with fuelling the video nasty era in the United Kingdom.
Italian studios were charged with stepping over the line in many countries with the late 70s series of Nazi exploitation films.
