Election Resources on the Internet: Elections to the Italian Parliament
Senate elections were held under a system in which three-quarters of the seats were filled in single-member constituencies, provided the winning candidate received at least sixty-five percent of the constituency vote; this requirement did not apply to the Valle d'Aosta Senate seat election, which was carried out by plurality voting.
Seventy-seven percent of the Italian electorate took part in the vote, in which a proposal to repeal the sixty-five percent constituency threshold for Senate elections was overwhelmingly approved, with 82.7% of the valid vote.
In the election, held on April 21, 1996, the Olive Tree secured a narrow majority of seats in the Chamber of Deputies, and a somewhat larger majority in the Senate.

Italian general election, 2006 - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
On October 18, 2005, Italian PM Silvio Berlusconi announced the next Italian general election to be held on April 9, 2006.
The Italian law prescribes that the Parliament accept twice, in each of the chambers and with at least three months' interval, every modification to the constitution, and, if it passes with less than 2/3 of the votes, a national referendum on the modification can be held.
It should be remembered that Italian PM Silvio Berlusconi had previously been a strong supporter of a uninominal electoral law; in 1995, talking about his coalition, he even defined the uninominal principle as "our religion".

Italy will hold a general election on April 9, 2006, Prime Minister Silvio Berlusconi said on Tuesday, confirming speculation that the vote would be held a month ahead of schedule.
In Italy, it normally takes well over a month to form a government after a general election and Ciampi is worried that if the ballot is held as scheduled toward the end of May, the new parliament will immediately face a logjam of work.
Prodi called on Monday for the general election to be held in April at the same time as a major round of local elections, saying this would save the cash-strapped state some 150 million euros.

Indeed, the parties on the left and centre-left had a combined total equal to their score in 1996, but this time round several left-leaning parties ran separately, notably the Refounded Communists (RC) and the party of former anti-corruption judge Antonio Di Pietro.
It appears that Italians are gradually coming round to the notion of a two-bloc system, as nearly all of the smaller, unaligned parties -- with the exception of the RC -- fared worse than expected, failing to surmount the 4 per cent threshold required to qualify for parliamentary seats by proportional representation.
