The Rex has also been remembered in film, making two notable cameo appearances, the first during the climax of Dodsworth, the 1936 drama directed by William Wyler, the second in Amarcord (1973), directed by Federico Fellini, in which the citizens of Rimini celebrate as the liner sails past on her maiden voyage.

Built with accommodation for 184-1st, 334-3rd and 1,368-steerage class passengers, Built in 1922 by Vulcan Werke, Hamburg, she was launched on 8th May 1922 as the CAP NORTE for the Hamburg South America Line.
In less than 15 minutes the liner sank with the loss of 1014 lives, including a large contingent of Salvation Army delegates who were on their way to a conference in the UK, and within four miles of the riverbank.

After September 9, 1939, when World War II began, Rex, along with her other Italian running mates, were the last foreign-flag ships still in service, supposedly as a symbol of the neutrality of Italy.
