USS Harder (SS-568), a Tang-class submarine, was the second ship of the United States Navy to be named for the harder, a fish of the mullet family found off South Africa.
She was taken under tow by Tringa (ASR-16) and endured the longest tow in submarine history, 2100 miles (3400 km) across the Atlantic to New London, Connecticut.
Commissioned on 18 August 1974 as Romeo Romei (S-516), ex-Harder served the Italian Navy until she was decommissioned and scrapped.

 History of the Tang Class Boats
The fleet submarine was obsolete and even though it would exist for another 20 years, it was as useful in the new submarine world as a biplane was at the beginning of World War II.
The submarine officers however, lobbied hard for retention of the aft tube nest but settled for two tubes of 21" and a length of 15 feet.
Thus none of the submarine crews of the force which made patrols during that conflict, some of which were longer and as arduous as World War II patrols were able to earn war patrol pins.

 USS Harder (SS 568)
The HARDER subsequently served in the Italian Navy as INS ROMEO ROMEI (S 516) until eventually decommissioned in 1988.
During the next several years she carried out a schedule of training and readiness operations with ships of the Atlantic Fleet and Allied NATO nations operating from the North Atlantic to the Caribbean, she engaged in sonar evaluation tests, supported ASW tactical exercises, and participated in submerged simulated attack operations.
After completing a 3 month advanced submarine exercise in the Atlantic, HARDER changed her home port to Charleston, S.C., where she arrived 17 November and joined Submarine Squadron 4.

Served Italian Navy until decommissioned 28 Feb 1986.
Loaned to Italy, 18 Aug 1974; renamed ROMEO ROMEI (S-516).
Subsequently returned and sunk as target off Pearl Harbor in 1991.
