Italic type was first produced by Aldus Manutius and the Aldine Press in 1501 as a condensed type for simple, compact volumes.
Unlike the italic type of today, the capital letters were upright roman capitals which were shorter than the ascending lower-case italic letters and used about sixty-five tied letters (ligatures) in the Aldine Dante and Virgil of 1501.

Jenson did not design an italic type to accompany his roman, so Slimbach used the italic types cut by Ludovico degli Arrighi in 1524-27 as his models for the italics in Adobe Jenson.

Type Forms and Type-Form Indicators: Specific provision is made by the use of type-form indicators for the transcription of boldface, italic, script, and sanserif print type forms.
However, the specific type form must be shown when a different type form is introducted to convey a special mathematical distinction, as when the author uses different type forms to distinguish between two meanings of the same letter.
When boldface type is used in print to identify letters as vectors or to denote a zero as the null vector, the boldface type has mathematical significance and must be shown in braille.

An important factor in the composition of a piece of printing is the selection of the correct type faces
Choosing the right type face makes clear the sense of the message, and imparts that atmosphere or environment which enables it to be more easily understood.
Because there are so many type designs to choose from, it is easier to first choose a general type style or classification to suit your graphic design, and then, look for a particular type face that relates to that classification.
Italic is not as legible as roman when used as paragraph matter and is therefore not recommended for large areas of setting.

Italic was originally a separate style of writing -- not a complement to roman type, but a different and completely equal style of writing that originated in the papal chancery and other centers of official manuscript production in Renaissance Italy.
The fact that italic is usually slanted and more cursive in form than the upright formality of ordinary roman type gives it some of its penchant for emphasis; it has a sort of forward thrust, because of its slant.
There are italic types that have very little slant at all; there are also "oblique romans" that have nothing but their slanted angles to distinguish them from roman type.

 Italic type faces
The Italic typefaces derived from some of the book hands which were developed to write more speedily, showing letters sloping and joined together.
Aldus wished to print compact editions of classical texts and developed the Italic type-face as it retained clarity and regularity whilst permitting smaller sizes (or fonts) to be used, and the sloping characteristics of the hand also permitted more words to be fitted on a page.
The first book to be wholly printed with the Italic hand was his edition of the Works of the classical author Virgil, which he printed in 1501, the type face having been designed for him by Francesco Griffo.

Italic type   (Site not responding. Last check: )
The first italic type was employed by Aldus Manutius on his famous edition of Virgil, published at Venice in 1501, and is said to have been cut by Francesco de Bologna to imitate the beautiful hand-writing of Petrarch, famous Italian poet.
The italic was used for the complete text, and in the hands of Aldus and the Elzevirs it made an admittedly graceful page medium, but somewhat too informal, in our estimation, and less legible than the more dignified roman style.
The use of italic for emphasis in roman text was a later development which some say has marked the loss of its individual character, and not until Garamond made matched romans and italics was associated use considered.

Italic was the Italian cursive vernacular type, and it ultimately drove out all other vernacular types wherever roman letters came into general use.
Placing italic fonts on bodies corresponding to roman fonts was the outcome of its later use in connection with roman for purposes of differentiation, emphasis, and for “liminary and preliminary” matter.
Though the character on which Aldus based his italic was more quickly written than the older book-hands, it was far slower to set up as he rendered it in type: and it certainly was foolish to try to imitate written characters by type, when by so doing much useless labour was necessitated.

Text type faces should fit snugly together with less space between the words than is customary with normal Roman types and, because of their complex structure, should never be set in all-capital form.
These type faces are also known as novelty faces and are primarily designed to be used for a word or words in display or headings where the product needs a close-matching type face.
