Itanium 2 - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
The Itanium 2 is an IA-64 64-bit microprocessor developed jointly by Hewlett-Packard (HP) and Intel, and introduced on July 8, 2002.
The Itanium 2 has seen heavy use in compute-bound supercomputers, and large corporate database servers, where parallelism and compile-time optimizations are most effective.
It had 4096 1.4Ghz Itanium 2 processors and was connected by a Quadrics QsNet II interconnect.

Itanium - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Itanium was used by a number of server vendors, including Bull, Fujitsu, Fujitsu-Siemens Computers, Hitachi, HP, NEC, Silicon Graphics, Unisys, IBM, and Dell, some of whom migrated to the Itanium 2 when it became available.
Itanium is being positioned as the top end processor for the most demanding workloads such as database servers, operations management, and customer relationship management [6].
Meanwhile, Intel and HP are “bullish on Itanium,” [11]; IDC has released a report noting a high level of satisfaction among Itanium adopters [12]; and the hardware vendors of the Itanium Solutions Alliance have committed to investing a collective $10 billion in the architecture through the end of the decade [13].

New Itanium chips target ... - Apr. 17, 2004   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-11-03)
INTEL Corp. recently introduced two new Itanium 2 chips that intend to break the cost barrier and broaden its reach to the market for "lower-cost" servers.
The new Itanium 2 processors are "28 percent lower in price," compared with the Itanium processors launched last year, Intel said in a statement issued to media.
The two new processors are the Itanium 2 processor at 1.4 Gigahertz (Ghz) with 3 MB level three (L3) cache and the Itanium 2 processor at 1.6 GHz with 3 MB L3 cache.

Itanium 2 and Hammer: Speed semantics - TechUpdate - ZDNet   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-11-03)
First we had Intel announcing the new Itanium 2, now with bleach, borax, and brighteners (or at least with a faster clock speed than the original Itanium, 3MB of on-die L3 cache, and an increased system bus speed--all of which make it a genuine world-class CPU in design).
Itanium was designed to deal with three critical issues: Long-term memory performance, integrity, and server performance.
Bad as it might be for the economy, I'd avoid choosing between Itanium 2 and Hammer until I came up with some honest comparative data for the production versions of the two platforms--and not just rely on the praise or pans of pundits.

However, it doesn't affect a faster 1.5GHz successor--called Itanium 2 6M and formerly code-named Madison--that is set for release in mid-2003, she said.
IBM said Monday that it has put shipments of its just-released x450 Itanium 2 server on hold until the glitch is fixed and is notifying customers that have the systems.
The move doesn't affect IBM's overall Itanium plans, which include a server based on the Itanium 2 6M and planned for later in 2003, she said.

Support for Itanium 2 Grows as Dual-Core Processor Launches
The latest Itanium chip is called the Dual-Core Intel Itanium 2 processor 9000 series, but you may know it better by its codename, "Montecito." Launched in July, its dual-core architecture (which means each processor has two exception cores) doubles the performance from previous Itanium 2 processors while reducing power consumption.
Itanium 2 solutions are an excellent choice for data-intensive, business-critical workloads that take advantage of the large memory and enhanced parallel processing.
Server vendors in the Itanium Solutions Alliance are also hard at work collaborating with Intel to synchronize their development efforts so their solutions for the Itanium platform are coordinated with processor development.

HP is the heavyweight leader in the OLTP benchmarking race, holding the distinction of the highest performing non-clustered Itanium 2 benchmark of 707,102 tpmC (TPC-C).
The key challenge for NEC may be their perceived weaker market presence outside of Asia and the customer perception of a niche player trying hard to market, sell and support Itanium 2 servers but lacking the resources and presence of the bigger players.
The strategies of all Itanium 2 server vendors will be put to the test now that the Madison pedal has been pushed to the metal.
