Unlike national parks, most of which tend to sound familiar even if you've never visited them (you may not know exactly where Carlsbad Caverns National Park is, but most likely you've at least heard of it, right?), state parks tend to have lower profiles and are often known only to state residents.
Itasca (Lake Itasca, Minn., 218-266-2100, www.dnr.state.mn.us) is my favorite state park, out of the dozens I've visited over the years.
At the state's northwest tip is Fort Stevens State Park (near Warrenton, Ore., 503-861-1671, www.oregonstateparks.org), a former military installation that figures prominently in two little-known chapters of American history.

I improve my day at Minnesota's oldest state park (1891) by biking the five miles from the new Jacob V. Brower Visitor Center to the headwaters of the Mississippi on the north end of the massive Lake Itasca.
It is nearly impossible to visit Itasca on a summer weekend due to the crowds (500,000 people visit the park annually) and even on the mid-week day I visit this historic park, the headwaters area has all the ambiance of Disneyland.
The parking lot near the headwaters is jammed with vehicles carrying license plates from every state in the nation.

Thankfully in the late 1800s, Jacob V. Brower a land surveyor, came to the park region and saw the Pine Stand being logged off and had the foresight to protect some of the pine forests for future generations.

The Itasca Moraine Chapter and the Star of the North Chapter have set a goal of having the North Country Trail constructed and certified from the Chippewa National Forest to the Old Headquarters Site in the Bad Medicine Area by 2007.
Locating this route is fortunate as it means we can get from the Chippewa to Itasca without passing over any private land except we plan to use a 100 yards or so of bordering private Potlatch land in order to avoid building and maintaining a short boardwalk.

I was born and raised thirty miles norh of the park and spent many childhood hours walking the trails and grouse hunting the nearby state forests.
It's one of my favorite places and I spend several weeks each fall in Itasca fishing, hiking, and photographing little slices of this 100 square mile park.
