The Ithaca-Tompkins Airport will use these federal funds to extend parallel Taxiway A. Federal regulations require 400 feet of separation between the taxiway and runway and the separation is currently only 250 feet.
For Ithaca Tompkins, the funding will not only be used for business development, but will help absorb some of the start-up and transition costs for the airport during the first year of Northwest Airlines’ service.

In 2004, Airport Manager Bob Nicholas made it clear that the airport, which had long been self-sufficient, would be looking for an additional $400,000 from Tompkins County in its 2005 budget.
Last week, the Tompkins County Legislature approved a tentative deal between the Ithaca Tompkins Regional Airport and Northwest Airlines to bring a second carrier into the county with hope of lowering costs and creating healthy competition within the airport.
Though the airport will be offering some costly incentives, revenue will be gained in other ways such as the rent that Northwest will pay for counter and office space, sharing of the airport's common areas and competition for US Airways.
