Messene - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
The former of these (740 m or 2,630 ft) served as the acropolis, and was included within the same system of fortifications as the lower city.
The wall is flanked by towers about 31 ft (9 m) high set at irregular intervals: these have two storeys with loopholes in the lower and windows in the upper, and are entered by doors on a level with the top of the wall which is reached by flights of steps.
Of the former but little remains: the latter, however, is excellently preserved and consists of a circular court about 20 yd (18 m) in diameter with inner and outer gates, the latter flanked by square towers some 11 yd (10 m) apart.

The site chosen for Messene -- incorporating Mount Ithome -- was also symbolically as well as strategically appropriate, for Ithome, and its mountain-top sanctuary of Zeus Ithomatas, had long served as the refuge and 'heart' of Messenian territory.
The walls of Messene embraced not only the acropolis of Ithome and the 'built-up' town, but a considerable area of countryside as well -- the wall line is some nine kilometers long.

History of the Peloponnesian War by Thucydides
The Lacedaemonians, meanwhile, finding the war against the rebels in Ithome likely to last, invoked the aid of their allies, and especially of the Athenians, who came in some force under the command of Cimon.
Meanwhile the rebels in Ithome, unable to prolong further a ten years' resistance, surrendered to Lacedaemon; the conditions being that they should depart from Peloponnese under safe conduct, and should never set foot in it again: any one who might hereafter be found there was to be the slave of his captor.
So they went forth with their children and their wives, and being received by Athens from the hatred that she now felt for the Lacedaemonians, were located at Naupactus, which she had lately taken from the Ozolian Locrians.

 Greek Religion: CULT OF ZEUS
Hearing this they thought that the oracle was in their favour and granted them victory; for as they themselves possessed the sanctuary of Zeus Ithomata (of Ithome) within the walls, the Lakedaimonians could not forestall them in making the dedication.
Joining some countrymen, he entered [the town] Ithome with them, and as soon as night fell, dedicated these tripods of clay to the god, and returned to Sparta to tell the Lakedaimonians.
The retirement of the Messenians from Ithome was secured by the strength of the place; also the Pythia announced to the Lakedaimonians that assuredly they would be punished if they committed a crime against the suppliant of Zeus Ithomatos (of Ithome).

"Lifting her great arm she [Rhea] smote the mountain [Mount Ithome] with her staff; and it was greatly rent in twin for her and poured forth a mighty flood.
Therein, O Lord, she cleansed thy [the baby Zeus’] body; and swaddled thee, and gave thee to Neda to carry within the Cretan covert, that thou mightst be reared secretly: Neda, eldest of the Nymphai who then were about her bed, earliest birth after Styx and Philyre.
The Messenians have their share in the story: for they too say that the god was brought up among them and that his nurses were Ithome and Neda, the river having received its name from the latter, while the former, Ithome, gave her name to the mountain.
