Itihasa (Sanskrit: thus verily happened) refers collectively to the epic Hindu scriptures, detailing the actions of divine incarnations on earth while interspersing them with often large sections of philosophical and ethical discourse.

 The standard of valid knowledge
The identity of Itihasa and Puranas with the Rg Veda etc., with respect to their transcendental origin, is expressed in the Madhyandina Sruti itself: "...in the same way, my dear, what is know as the Rg Veda, Yajur Veda, Sama Veda, Atharva Veda, Itihasa, Purana...
If it were not the case (that Itihasa and Puranas are Vedic in nature), then the characterization of them as the "fifth" in the preceding verses would be unwarranted, since only things of the same kind can be combined to form a single sum.
Moreover, even if (Itihasa and Puranas) are considered to belong to the class of sastras which illuminate the meaning of the Vedas, still, they excel all others due to the eminence of their expounder (Vyasa).

Though Europeans and others, in recent years, are found increasing the scope of the meaning of the word history, and it is encompassing many other subjects than political history, it has remained limited to the material world only.
Indian approach, as the word Itihasa means, has all the time remained integrated, taking man as a spiritual as well as material constituent of nature.

The Mahabharata and Ramayana are itihasa on a large scale and with a massive purpose.
DPC consciously uses the term aitihasika (an adverbial form of itihasa) and avoids the term historical mainly to highlight the mode of consciousness of the concerned peoples themselves, their ways of life and thought.
The context in which this definition of itihasa has been offered is devoted to the topics of education for the ideal king.

It will discuss how this past straddles "modern" conventions of history and "traditional" Indian notions of itihasa to combine an attention to chronology and temporality with a belief in the divinity of the founder of the sect.
They also legitimize this itihasa as the only "authentic" history of the sect.

The aim of this paper is to engage with certain explicit and implicit characterizations that have been made recently by certain scholars about concepts of history or itihasa prevailing in general in pre-colonial South Asia.
It also seeks to demonstrate that unlike some recent scholarly characterizations in which historical or itihasa traditions in pre-colonial South Asia have been in a sense generalized as "Puranic" or mythic, historical/itihasa traditions in 18th-century Bengal were actually registering significant and dynamic new changes.
The substance of this paper will examine the multiple meanings and functions associated with the concept of history/itihasa, specifically in 18th-century Bengal.
