OKINAWA, Japan (CNN) -- A day after tens of thousands of demonstrators protested against both the G8 summit and U.S. troops stationed in Japan, U.S. President Bill Clinton vowed to reduce his nation's "footprint" on Okinawa island.
Clinton, the first U.S. president to visit Okinawa since the United States returned the island to Tokyo in 1972, was expected to leave the G8 early to rejoin peace talks at Camp David between Israeli Prime Minister Ehud Barak and Palestinian leader Yassar Arafat.
The battle at Okinawa -- among the bloodiest during that war, and which lasted more than 80 days -- was especially fierce because the island was used as the last line of defense by the Japanese, desperately hoping to keep the Allies from moving north to their main islands.
