Topic: Iuchar

Iuchar - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
In Irish mythology Iuchar was one of the sons of Tuireann of the Tuatha Dé Danann.
They succeeded in obtaining all that Lugh demanded, but returned to Ireland desperately injured, pleading for Lugh to heal them; but the latter refuses.
In at least one version of this tale, Brian is the clever and subtle one, while his brothers Iuchar and Iucharba are bumbling and easily overawed by Brian.

Celtic Myth and Legend: The Gaelic Gods: Chapter VIII. The Gaelic Argonauts
Iuchar and Iucharba would have granted it, and let him go; but their fiercer brother swore that Cian should be put an end to, even if he came back to life seven times.
Iuchar and Iucharba were in favour of admitting their guilt, but Brian was afraid that, if they confessed, Lugh would withdraw his offer to accept a fine, and would demand their deaths.
But, as soon as Brian saw it, he seized it with his left hand, and slew the man who was holding it, and Iuchar and Iucharba also hacked about them; and they cut their way down to the boat, leaving the King of Greece among the dead behind them.

 Brigit
These were the three gods of Danu from whom they were named, to wit the three sons of Bres son of Elatha, or the three sons of Tuirell Biccreo, Brian, Iuchar, Iucharba.
Now, in The Fate of the Children of Turenn, we learn that the three sons of Danu are Brian, Iuchar, and Iucharba; Danu is also the mother of the gods, the Tuatha Dé Danann.
If Brian, Iuchar and Iucharba are the sons of Danu, but also the sons of Bres, could they be the sons of Brigit?

We call the period from mid-July to mid-august Iuchar, and the fortnight with Lugnasad in the middle Lughna Dubh.
Though I tend to be all about the food, and have even been known to have a good recipe that is looking for the holiday it belongs to...
If one were to go with Iuchar, there is some evidence for also commemorating Lug's father Cian on this day/around this time, but that's another story.

 Anu/Anann
However, the goddess named Danand who appears in the LGE is not given as the mother of all the gods (impossibly anyway, since the text has been overwhelmingly euhemerized), but as the mother of "Brian, Iuchar, and Iucharba, the three gods of the Tuatha Dé Danann" and the three sons (usually) of Delbaeth/Turill.
However, confusion sets in, as in some redactions of the text, their mother is given as Morrigan, in others as Brigit.
Of course, the Morrigan is also sometimes thought to refer to all three sisters, and perhaps like the triple goddess Brigit, these are all one and the same goddess.

Mystic Realms Weaver's Grove - Lammas
But the last two week of July and the first two of august seem to be special and are called "iuchar" meaning Bordertime.
This might be because Lammas or Lughnassadh is considered the Gateway to the West and the direction to the Afterworld.
There is a saying I found while researching for this article that the Gaels have to describe the Lughnassadh month is: "Tri laithean den iuchar san fhaoileach, agus tri laithean den fhaoileach san iuchar".

The Religion of the Ancient Celts: Chapter V. The Tuatha Dé Danann   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-30)
THE meaning formerly given to Tuatha Dé Danann was "the men of science who were gods," danann being here connected with dán, "knowledge." But the true meaning is "the tribes or folk of the goddess Danu,"
which agrees with the cognates Tuatha or Fir Dea, "tribes or men of the goddess." The name was given to the group, though Danu had only three sons, Brian, Iuchar, and Iucharbar.
The story is an ætiological myth explaining the names of Ireland, but the three wives may be a group like the Matres, guardians of the land which took its name from them.

This section includes the great battle and defeat of the Fomorians, led by the evil Balor.
The major protagonists of the story, however, are actually a trio of disgraced brothers, Brian, Iuchar and Iucharba.
They are charged by Lugh with a series of quests after the battle for ignobly murdering the hero's defenseless father, and so they set out to various parts of the world to gain by any means several magical treasures.
