  Bunin I.A.
Ivan Bunin was born on his parents' estate near the village of Voronezh, central Russia.
Bunin's grandfather was a prosperous landowner, who started to spent his property after the death of his young wife.
Bunin's realistic portrayal of village life destroyed the idealized picture of unspoiled peasants, and arose much controversy with its "characters sunk so far below the average of intelligence as to be scarcely human." Two years later appeared SUKHODOL (Dry Valley), a lament for the passing of gentry life and a veiled biography of Bunin's family.

Oona made no effort to hide her surprise and chagrin that Ivan was not dead, but went on:
It was an old house, with high walls and tall poplars almost overhanging the Seine; but the oddity--and perhaps the police value--of its architecture was this: that there was no ultimate exit at all except through this front door, which was guarded by Ivan and the armoury.
Yet it was necessary for him to get up because Ivan Matveich, the police-officer, would soon call for him and he had to go with him--either to bargain for the forest or to put Mukhorty's breeching straight.
