Ivan Bloch (via CobWeb/3.1 planetlab1.tamu.edu)   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-11-06)
Ivan Stanislavovic Bloch (July 24, 1836, Radom - December 25, 1902 / 1901, Warsaw) (aka Johann von Bloch, '''Jean de Bloch''', Ivan Bliokh) was a Polish banker and railway financier who devoted his private life to the study of modern industrial warfare.
Bloch concluded that a war between the Great powers would be a war of entrenchment and that rapid attacks and decisive victories were likewise a thing of the past.
Bloch's foresight is somewhat qualified by what proved an underestimation of the tactical and strategic significance of indirect (eg, artillery) fire, and his incapacity to foresee the development of the armoured tank and military aircraft.

Reading Ivan Blochs work a century after it was published, it is indeed remarkable to note how accurate his predictions on the nature of a coming war turned out to be.
The warnings by Ivan Bloch led to impressive efforts, but in the end they were unable to contain the pressures building up, and all the old order crumbled and disappeared as a result.
The third of the issues of Ivan Bloch was the question of the relationship of Russia with the western parts of Europe.

Ernest Bloch Collection (Library of Congress)
Although the association between the Library and Bloch was advanced by Bloch himself, the Bloch children (Suzanne Bloch Smith, Ivan Bloch, and Lucienne Bloch Dimitroff) have maintained that alliance since before his death.
The donation of Bloch materials by Suzanne Bloch in 1989 established the Library as the largest repository of Ernest Bloch music manuscripts, manuscript lectures and lecture notes, correspondence, and personal effects in the United States.
The Bloch Collection covers the life and careers of the Jewish Swiss-born violinist/composer/conductor and photographer, beginning with his grade school report cards, dated 1888 through 1894, and continuing beyond his death in 1959 with the publication of some musical works, and exhibitions of his photography.

Bloch's detailed analysis of modern warfare, its tactical, strategic and political implications, was widely read in Europe.
He was able to calculate that entrenched men would enjoy a fourfold advantage over infantry advancing across open ground.
Bloch attended the first Hague Peace Conference in 1899, possibly at the invitation of Tsar Nicholas II, and distributed copies of his work to delegates from the diplomatic missions of 26 states, to little avail.

 Causes of World War 1
The belief that a war in Europe would be swift, decisive and 'Over by Christmas' is often considered a tragic underestimation - the theory being, that had it been widely appreciated beforehand that the war would open such an abyss under European civilisation, no-one would have prosecuted it.
This account is less plausible on a review of the available military theory at the time, especially the work of Ivan Bloch, an early candidate for the Nobel Peace Prize.
Bloch's predictions of industrial warfare leading to bloody stalemate, attrition, and even revolution, were widely known in both military and pacifist circles.

Sexologist Ivan Bloch noted that the urge to affirm a "masculine culture" was leading even some heterosexual men to renounce women in horror.
The German-Jewish Marxist philosopher Ernst Bloch (1885-1977), for example, said that Weininger was driven by "the most vehement misogyny known to history".
Ludwig Wittgenstein grew up in Vienna and his adolescence coincided with the period when the Weininger "cult" was at its height.

IN 1883, one year before the invention of the dirigible, Albert Robida's book War in the Twentieth Century envisaged a sudden, crushing air strike, while Ivan S. Bloch's 1898 treatise on warfare expected bombardment from airships in the near future.
With the evolution of airships-in particular, the flights of Count Ferdinand von Zeppelin's dirigibles toward the end of the first decade of the twentieth century-speculation increased about the prospects for their military usage.
