 IVAN GUNDULIC: ENGLISH BIOGRAPHY
Gundulic is famous for three works: the poem Suze sina razmetnoga (The tears of the prodigal son), the drama Dubravka, and the epic Osman which, unfortunately, he did not complete.
Gundulic was the first writer in Dubrovnik to sound a warning that Venetian power was pressing heavily upon the population.
Gundulic brought out the event in his epic, not because of Osman, but in order to illustrate the decay of Turkish power under the blows of the Slavic state during his reign, and to inspire hope for the liberation of all Slavs.
