Ivan Hlinka, an exceptional hockey player who later coached the Czech Republic hockey team to a gold medal at the Olympics, died in a car accident on Aug. 16.
Hlinka was named associate head coach of the Pittsburgh Penguins under Herb Brooks in Feb. 2000, and promoted to head coach in June.
Hlinka died of injuries he sustained on Sunday night when a truck collided head-on with his car approximately 70 miles west of Prague.

Although Hlinka is generally thought of as a no-nonsense old-school hardass by North American pundits, and not held in much esteem, Hlinka is quite a legend in the Czech Republic for his efforts as a player for the Czechoslovakian national team and as a coach of the new Czech Republic national program.
Hlinka was also part of the 1976 Olympic squad that won silver and 1972 Olympic squad that won a bronze.
Hlinka was 33 when he returned back to the Czechoslovakia, and then two years later, he would begin his distinguished 2nd career as a coach.

While most teams play 3 lines and spot a 4th, Hlinka early in the season seemed to play 2 lines and spot a 3rd.
That said Hlinka will be back next year because he has 2 years left on a contract and the organization probably will not pay him to sit around.
