Whims of Fate [The Voice of Russia]
Reeling as he was from the thrashing he had suffered in September, Ivan Konev pulled himself together and shortly after managed to rout the Germans and halt their further advance thus foiling the enemy’s plan to outflank the Red Army and strike Moscow from the north.
In virtually no time, Ivan Konev’s forces zeroed in on the city much to the relief of the local Resistance fighters who were waging a losing battle against the regular Nazi forces.
Ivan Konev was always in the forefront of his advancing forces, always sure and reserved and inspiring confidence in his men.

Konev had told his subordinate commanders that should any of them survive the next assault without driving the Germans from the heights, they would be shot for cowardice.
Konev was made aware of the German movement to the east when a Soviet aircraft spotted the relief columns and reported to Zhukov.
After the war, however, when Zhukov's diaries and Konev's private letters were released, those works painted a very bleak picture of the battle and their personal relationship.

Konev was assigned to attack south of Berlin, and Stalin purposely left the boundary between Konev and Zhukov open to promote a competition ("socialist competition"?) between the two to reach Berlin faster.

When Soviet aviation became more organized and hundreds of guns and Katyushas started firing, the situation started to improve and the bridgehead was eventually preserved.

While Konev headed out toward the important communications hub of Kirovograd, Vatutin struck the 4th Panzer Army’s left flank and then headed for the Bug River.
A.G. Kravchenko exploited the gap, pushing the 88th to the northwest and breaking communications between the XLII Army Corps and the remainder of the 1st Panzer Army.
In the 2nd Ukrainian Front sector, Konev succeeded in expanding his previous gains, but an attack by the 14th and 11th Panzer Divisions almost succeeded in driving the Russians back.

The German 9th Army covered the defenses of the Seelow Heights against Marshal Zhukov's 1st Belorussian Front (1BF) but its position was unhinged by the successful attack of Marshal Ivan Konev's 1st Ukrainian Front (1UF) against Army Group Centre on the Neisse.
Because of the high speed of the advance of Konev's forces this meant 9th Army was now threatened with envelopment by the two massive Soviet pincers that were heading for Berlin from the south and east.
Konev knew that to break out to the west the 9th Army would have to cross the Berlin–Dresden autobahn south of a chain of lakes starting at Teupitz and running north-east.

In it, Marshal Ivan Konev, whose sector lay south of Berlin, figured as a jealous rival, ever eager to steal credit for the victory from Marshal Georgi Zhukov, who had command in the Berlin sector; and Josef Stalin maliciously promoted the ensuing dissension.
Konev gives a bravura performance, taking Potsdam on 22 April and going another ten miles northwest to a junction with Zhukov's force on the Havel River on the 25th.
Stalin, having made his point to Zhukov with the introduction of Konev's troops to the scene, now saw to it that Konev's ambitions would in turn be thwarted, but neither was to know of this yet." But Konev did not have long to wait.

His story includes authentic pen portraits of many prominent commanders such as Marshal of Armoured Forces P. Rybalko, and Generals D. Gusev and N. Pukhov, and his reflections on the nature of modern warfare, the art of moving large masses and equipment, and the morale of the Soviet soldier.
Here is the story, told by a man who saw it all with his own eyes, a general who knew every detail of every operation because it was his duty to carry them out.
Half the book is devoted to the most authentic account yet written of the Berlin operation, which Konev himself describes as more complex than any he had ever undertaken.

One of the worst units on the front, the 88th was formed from various scrapings of SS training schools and had never been declared combat-ready (how any group of armed men could fail to receive that designation at this late date is hard to fathom).
The German stand at Wiesenau represented one extreme of fanaticism: the SS troops continued to counter-attack the Soviets in the town despite their lack of training and experience, at least as a formed unit.
From the south and southeast, Marshal Ivan Konev’s 1st Ukrainian Front was moving quickly against light opposition.
