Ivan Sag - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Ivan Sag is a professor of linguistics at Stanford University.

These are based on a construction-based mode of linguistic analysis that has been rejected by Chomsky and others because they have been judged incapable of expressing appropriate generalizations about grammar.
This talk presents an overview of the theory of English clausal constructions sketched in Ginzburg and Sag (2000).
Following the insights of Kay and Fillmore (1999), constructions are taken to be basic units of grammar.

Philip Miller (Lille University), Ivan Sag (Stanford University): French clitics and morphology (HPSG)
For instance in the ``official'' version of HPSG (Pollard and Sag 1994), while there is still room for a small set of phonetically unrealized elements, such as WH-traces or null relativizers, most of the traditional empty categories assumed within the Government and Binding Theory are eliminated.
Actually, there is an even more drastic line of research in HPSG (cf., for instance, Sag (1994)) aimed at the total exclusion of empty categories from the inventory of the signs available to any language.

I would not have found this claim particularly noteworthy, other than for its mysterious attribution (Schachter cites an unpublished manuscript by Bell (1974), who allegedly cites Kenneth Hale), were it not for an (unpublished) counter-observation made by Ivan Sag.
In this squib I should like to investigate whether Sag's examples actually constitute a valid counterexample, and if so, how much damage is done.
Is the hypothesis of Hale (or Bell's interpretation of it, or Schachter's interpretation of that; henceforth, `the HBS generalization') a statistical universal, for which we must be content with a certain amount of material on the lighter side of the scale?
