A Life for the Tsar - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
The historical basis of the plot involves Ivan Susanin, a patriotic hero of the early 17th century who gave his life in the expulsion of the invading Polish army for the newly elected Tsar Mikhail, the first of the Romanov dynasty, elected in 1613.
The original title of the opera was to be Ivan Susanin, after the hero, but when Nicholas I attended a rehearsal, Glinka changed the title to A Life for the Tsar as a monarchy-pleasing gesture.

Ivan Susanin - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Ivan Susanin (Иван Сусанин) (died in 1613) was a Russian folk hero and martyr of the early 17th century's Time of Troubles.
In the early 19th century the charters attracted attention of nascent Russian historiography and Ivan Susanin was proclaimed a Russian national hero and a symbol of Russian peasants' devotion to the tsar.
In the Soviet Union the opera was officially known as Ivan Susanin, and the emphasis of Susanin's deed was placed on the demise of the Poles, rather on the saving of Tsar.

Susanin’s daughter Antonida is in love with Sobinin, but her father will not permit their wedding to take place until a new Tsar is safely on the throne, despite reassurances from Sobinin that the 16 year-old Tsar Mikhail Romanov has already been popularly elected.
Susanin also has an adopted orphan, Vanya, who fears that the Poles will soon arrive in their search for the new Tsar, but Susanin assures him that none will betray the young Romanov.
The role of Susanin is really for a bass-baritone, one for whom the notes from middle C up a third to E are comfortable, and one rarely senses that Mikhailov is here.

Once, Ivan Ivanovich Susanin (that particular historical figure, that gave his life to the tsar and ended up as a leading character in one of Glinka's operas) walked into a tavern, sat at the table, and ordered himself an entrecote.
While the tavern owner was frying the entrecote, Ivan Ivanovich was chewing on his beard lost in his thoughts.
Ivan Ivanovich was hungry and according to the time tradition, he grabbed the entrecote with his bare hands and started eating it.

Mad about Glinka. Russian conductor Valery Gergiev arrives in London later this month to conduct a rare concert ...
It was Glinka's groundbreaking largescale opera Ivan Susanin, rechristened A Life for the Tsar for its première in late 1836, that singlehandedly persuaded a reluctant Russian capital to take Russian opera seriously.
Ivan Susanin, embracing a highly patriotic theme, is not without sentimentality; and Glinka unashamedly embraced the Romanov revival, securing a royal pat on the back (as well as a change in the title).
Beginning almost exactly a century before Ivan Susanin, under the empresses Anne, Elizabeth and Catherine the Great, from 1735 onwards, a train of Italian composers made their way to the Imperial court.

The villains of the piece are the Poles, who had supported the claims of Ivan's young son Dmitri (he died mysteriously in Boris Godunov's reign) in the persons of two false Dmitris aspiring to the Russian throne.
Though the first false Dmitri was shot from a cannon, and the second was summarily bumped off, the Poles remained a major menace, with their king Sigismund master of Smolensk and ready to pounce.
A Polish attempt to waylay Michael Romanov in the neighbourhood of Kostroma was thwarted by the ingenuity and loyalty of Ivan Susanin, ready to die rather than let the young Tsar be captured.

It was removed from the repertoire until 1939, when it was grandly restored to the Bolshoi Theater with a revised libretto.
