Flipper was first introduced in the Ivan Tors feature films Flipper (1963) and Flipper's New Adventure (1964).
On the TV series spin-off, Flipper was the domesticated dolphin pet of Sandy (Luke Halpin) and Bud (Tommy Norden) the sons of Porter Ricks (Brian Kelly), the game warden at Coral Key Park, Florida (Marine Callsign: WD9598).
Ivan Tors producer of the underwater series SEA HUNT/SYN/1957-61 adapted their story for film and television.

Tors' next TV project, the Lloyd Bridges underwater classic Sea Hunt (1958-61), proved to be his most successful.
With the 1963 theatrical film Flipper (1963), Tors entered into his "smart animal" phase, which included such films as Clarence the Crosseyed Lion (1965) (which Tors directed as well as produced) and Namu the Killer Whale (1966), and such TV weeklies as Flipper (1964-67) and Gentle Ben (1967-69).

This fall, Tors will have five TV shows in the early-evening time slot, five more in reruns and a strong claim to succeed Walt Disney as the leading producer of family films.
He came to Hollywood as a screenwriter in 1940, but it was not until the mid-1950s, while filming a sea-horse opera called Sea Hunt, that he became impressed with the good manners of the sharks: he visited them in their underwater sets almost daily, was never once attacked.

Tors hired Strock as the editor on the movie and, when director Curt Siodmak quit the picture in a dispute with the producer, Tors engaged Strock as the director.

Despite his strabismus (the medical term for cross-eyed), which was present from birth and made training difficult, Clarence (ne Freddie) was a gentle lion who went on to have a successful Hollywood career.
Produced, of course, by Tors, the movie starred Marshall Thompson as a veterinarian studying animals in Africa, with Cheryl Miller as his daughter and Betsy Drake as a Dian Fossey inspired love interest.
Clarence, a wild lion whose eyes make hunting impossible (occasionally a scene is shot from the lion's double vision point-of-view), is taken in by Thompson and later saves the day when Drake and her research monkeys are threatened by poachers.
