The town of Ivangorod is located in Leningrad area on the eastern coast of the river of Narva.
Northern war of 1700-1721 begun by Peter I was the struggle for the liberation from Swedish authority in the north-west of Russia and for an access to the Baltic sea.
Ivangorod, as well as Koporje, Oreshek and Korela, lost its importance as an advanced post of Russia, as the border was removed far to the north and west.

The stronghold was considered to be a bridgehead of Narva united with the Narva Castle.
Later on, in the 18th-19th centuries, Ivangorod, constituting the one whole with Narva, was developing according to the plan approved by Catherine II in 1784.

Ivangorod (Russian: Ивангород; Estonian: Jaanilinn) is a town in Leningrad Oblast, Russia.
Ivangorod is a major border crossing point and a railroad station by the Tallinn–St. Petersburg line.
Having reoccupied Estonia during World War II in 1944, the Soviet authorities separated Ivangorod administratively from the rest of Narva, and transferred the territory to the Leningrad Oblast of the Russian SFSR in January 1945.
