In 1397, Norway entered a personal union with Denmark, and from 1536 Norway was subordinated under the Kingdom of Denmark-Norway.
When the union ended in 1814 the Dano-Norwegian koine had become the mother tongue of a substantial part of the Norwegian elite, but the more Danish-sounding solemn variety was still used on formal occasions.
After the personal union with Sweden was dissolved in 1905, both languages were developed further and reached what is now considered their classic forms after a reform in 1917.
