Ives was founded in Plymouth, Connecticut by Edward Ives, a descendant of Plymouth colony governor William Bradford.
Ives' trains were made of tin or cast iron and initially powered by clockwork, but like later electric trains, some models could whistle and smoke.
Ives initially produced electric trains in O gauge and 1 gauge.

Colt's earlier venture, the "Patent Arms Manufacturing Company", had declared bankruptcy years earlier and was no longer producing firearms, but the efficiency of the revolver design had become apparent to the US Army and they sought out the young entrepreneur to produce more.
The Hafner Manufacturing Company was a maker of clockwork-powered O gauge toy trains, based in Chicago, Illinois, from 1914 to 1951.

Actually the Ives Manufacturing Company did not bring the jovial, witty, Henry C. Schnibbe on board in that position, but the company’s poet laureate is exactly what he was to become.
With a typical Ives touch, he was known as the “Traffic Manager” of the Ives Railway System and was referred to by this title in advertising, publicity, and correspondence.
Ives found themselves in head-to-head competition with the Lionel Corporation of new York and the American Flyer based in Chicago.

Each train made by the Ives Manufacturing Company was considered to form a division of the Ives Railway Lines, and the boy who owned it was a Division Superintendent.
Ives, and many are the stories told of his kindness and generosity, and his continued insistence that every toy that bore the famous name “Ives” be just as fine as it was possible to make it.

Originally founded by William O. Coleman and William Hafner (who later left to reform his own company in 1914) as the Edmonds-Metzel Manufacturing Company in 1907 as a manufacturer of clockwork O-gauge trains, the company became known as American Flyer when electric trains were introduced in 1919.
Ives was founded by Harry Ives in 1868 and produced clockwork floor trains among other items.
Ives became the market leader in the United States in 1910 after introducing electric O-Gauge trains, and it maintained its position until surpassed by Lionel in 1924.

Ives was shipping barrels of cannon to Woolworth's department stores in the late 1800's.
