Papasov is of Bulgarian Roma (Gypsy) and Turk origin and comes from Kardzali, a city close to Bulgaria's Turkish and Greek borders.
Communist Bulgaria was not accommodating to Gypsy culture and it's unfortunate that the young Papasov was not often recorded as legend paints him as the leader of one of the Balkans' hottest bands.
Papasov's wild clarinet playing and popularity with Bulgarian Turks meant he was an obvious target and in 1982 he was arrested, beaten and taken to prison.

Although it's impossible not to admire Bulgarian clarinettist Ivo Papasov's facility on and consummate control of his instrument, he has never been a particular favourite of mine.
From its dramatic beginning with a short duet between keening clarinet and the shattering sound of the tapan drum, succeeded by a hurtling rachenitsa and culminating in a final and moving elegiac clarinet solo, this doesn't put a foot wrong.
Papasov's band, aided by a series of distinguished guests, slip from the down-home to the cosmopolitan with absolute assurance, and almost absurdly intricate unison passages give way to blistering solos from all participants without anyone seeming to pause for breath.

More Bulgarian than klezmer per se, this music nonetheless evokes a similar spirit, especially with Papasov's frenetically intense and beautiful clarinet runs and vocalist Maria Karafizieva's impassioned singing.
He employs an electric and slightly funky rhythm section which, while arguably diluting the true nature of the music, does serve to make it extremely listener friendly, providing a solid ground for the wilder instrumental forays.
Papasov's solo feature, "Ivo's Dream", is a breathtaking showcase of his control, depth of feeling and sheer virtuosity and Nechko Neshev's accordion work is a joy throughout.

The reunion of world-renowned Romani (Gypsy) instrumentalists Ivo Papasov (clarinet), Yuri Yunakov (saxophone), Neshko Neshev (accordion), and Salif Ali (drums) after more than a decade apart is being target-marketed in the States as "Bulgarian Bebop," which is just plain wrong.
Granted, the combo's irrepressibly vibrant updates on the Balkan folk tradition share high-velocity tempos, tricky time signatures, and tortuous melodies with the signature soundtracks of jazz legend Charlie Parker, but unlike bop, this "wedding music" is patently designed for the dance hall.
So if there's any jazz comparison to be made, it must point toward turn-of-the-century New Orleans, when a multiplicity of dynamic voices rose up in the streets and showed the public how to shake its collective ass.
