Born on 20 October 1958 in Belgrade, Ivo Pogorelich is one of the most provocative and unpredictable major pianists, known for dynamic and original interpretations.
In 1993 he initiated the Ivo Pogorelich Piano Competition in California.

When in 1980 the falnboyant Yugoslav Ivo Pogorelic didn't qualify for the third competition stage, Argerich, a jury member, proclaimed "shame" for her colleague's decision.
The 10th competition, in 1980, was won by Vietnam's Dang Thai Son but dominated by Critics' Award-winner Ivo Pogorelic, a 22-year-old pianist from Belgrade.
Pogorelic was a maverick, appearing on stage in a sweatshirt, scarf, necklace and sneakers and chewing gum with a nonchalant smile while playing the "different Chopin."
