  St. Ivo of Chartres
The printed works of Ivo of Chartres may be arranged into three categories; canonical writings, letters, and sermons.
But the most important feature of Ivo's work is perhaps his preface, "Prologus", which give new rules for solving the old problem of the discrepancies occurring in the texts of the Fathers and the councils.
The letters of Ivo, 288 in number (Merlet has added 40 more), from which we gather nearly all that we know of his life, are in the edition of Migne together with those of his correspondents.

Ivo of Chartres - Definition, explanation
Ivo (Yves) (born about 1040; died 1117) was bishop of Chartres from 1090-1117 and an important ecclesiastical figure and canon lawyer during the Investiture Crisis.
Ivo studied first in Paris and then at the Abbey of Bec in Normandy under Lanfranc where he would have met Anselm (like Lanfranc a future archbishop of Canterbury).
As bishop of Chartres and a canonist he opposed King Philip I's repudiation of his wife Bertha of Holland in order to marry Bertrade of Anjou in 1092.

Ivo acted as mediator in several investiture disputes and openly protested the simony of several members of the papal court.
Ivo was also a voluminous correspondent, and many of his letters reflecting the religious issues of his time are still extant (Benedictines, Delaney).

The Prologue to Bishop Ivo of Chartres' Decretum and Panormia has long been recognized as a seminal text in medieval canon law.
This treatise on the tension between rigor and mercy in judgment - and how they could be reconciled through dispensation - spoke not only to legal and theological concerns of the early twelfth century but also to enduring questions about the nature and limits of ecclesiastical law.
This enables a detailed examination of the text, which, from start to finish, reveals Ivo's conviction that love, caritas, was the essence of canon law.

The details of the Council of Clermont in His history suggest he attended the council personally, or knew someone who did, perhaps bishop Ivo of Chartres, who also influenced Fulcher's opinions on Church reform and the investiture controversy with the Holy Roman Empire.
Fulcher was part of the entourage of Count Stephen of Blois and Robert of Normandy which made its way through southern France and Italy in 1096, crossing into the Byzantine Empire from Bari and arrived in Constantinople in 1097, where they joined with the other armies of the First Crusade.

Sir: With your article on the discovery of a painting by Rogier van der Weyden [April 5] you have a reproduction of a portrait with the title "St. Ivo of Chartres." There seems to be some confusion here.
France's Ivo (Yves de Chartres) wrote collections of canon law, but it was St. Yves of Brittany who was the patron saint of lawyers and is renowned for his defense of the poor and for free legal aid to the peasants.
The landscape seen through the window in the portrait might well be the valley of the Guindy River running northeast to its junction with the Jaudy, with Tre-guier on the right bank of the Guindy and Plouguiel on the left.

In a decretal of Pope Eugenius III, we can already see aequitas as a canonical concept that could be substituted for misericordia or moderation as being the antithesis to rigorism in the interpretation of the canons.
At the end of the eleventh century, Bishop Ivo of Chartres gave a very important outline of the methods of canon law and of the character of its rules - the canons - in his famous prologue to his canonical collections.
In this great document, a doctrine of interpretation for canonical rules is developed in which we find the concept of "regnum charitatis' as the [*97] most important goal for all application of canon law.
