Ivor Hele : The Heroic Figure - Education, Table of Contents [Australian War Memorial]
Hele’s solid academic training in life drawing, figure studies and portraiture, acquired as a student in Paris and Munich, prepared him for the rigours of recording life on the front line during war.
Hele enlisted in the Army to assist his appointment as an official war artist and was seconded from the AIF while serving in the Middle East in 1941.
Hele’s drawings, which were frequently completed on the spot, are vigorous and powerful, showing both the physical endurance of the men and their quieter, more reflective moments.

ILLUSTRATION ART: IVOR HELE: THE GREAT WAR ILLUSTRATOR
Hele then traveled to the South Pacific island of New Guinea where he drew and painted the fierce combat between the Australians and the Japanese in dark and difficult jungle terrain.
At the height of the Korean War, Hele spent five months in the mud and the cold of Korea, brilliantly recording the struggles of the Australian soldiers in their trenches.
The most striking thing about Ivor Hele was that, after traveling the globe and devoting his life to recording every form of savagery that humans can wreak upon each other, he finally reached his saturation level of death and despair and retreated to an isolated cottage on a remote Australian beach.

Ivor Hele was born in Edwardstown, and started early training at the age of seven with James Ashton, followed by lessons at the South Australian School of Art.
While Hele's oil paintings show his delight in colours, his drawings of the femaie nude show his mastery of form, in the symmetry, contrasting curves and angles of the unadorned female body.
Hele's skill as a draughtsman is shown in the drawing of LT. EDWARD HAYWARD, 1940 (done some years before his oil painting of the same subject), where the artist's economical style captures the subtle nuances and personality of the sitter.

 Postcards - Ivor Hele Exhibition
As Jane Hylton, Curator of the Ivor Hele exhibition currently on at Carrick Hill explains, the way he captured it on canvas in the 1960s gives us a true appreciation of how this area once looked before the cereal crops gave way to the vine.
It was Hele's ability to capture the mysteries of the human form and his love of the portrait that also brought him to national prominence.
Ivor Hele completed more commissioned works that any other artist in the history of Australian art and soon Prime Ministers like Robert Menzies were beating a path to his home at Aldinga.
