Irish and English in Joyce's the Dead
She is more feminin than Miss Ivors, and this too makes her more connected to Ireland (Ireland is female in Irish mythology and is female in the old sense of the word).
Although Miss Ivors is not as purely Irish as Gretta Conroy, she, as a woman, and a devoted restorer of old Irish traditions, still belongs to the Irish group.
Lily, Miss Ivors and Gretta Conroy all represent the Irish people, and at some point of the story, are misunderstood and even hurt by Gabriel, who is not able to undertsand all that is going on around him.

Gabriel's encounters with Lily, Miss Ivors, and Gretta cause him troubles in establishing his masculine dominance and therefore establishing what he feels should be his identity and fulfillment via his manhood (463-4).
