The design of a horse drawn with a few strokes first appeared on Soma productions at the request of the Daimyo of Iwaki province in the mid 1600's, in honor of that region's fine horses.
This tea bowl has a galloping horse (after an original design by Kano Naonobu) in high relief on the inside bottom, and a high-relief tethered horse with the Soma family crest on the outside.
It is the type of Soma, or Iwaki, ware which is beige with brown specks, and is wheel-thrown but then re-formed using finger pressing and pinching.
