Early in the 17th century, Mori Terumoto, a then samurai ruler, built the Hagi Castle at the foot of Mt. Shizuki-yama at the northwest of Hagi, and this place had been the seat of the Yamaguchi prefectural government until the administration was moved to the city of Yamaguchi in the middle of the 19th century.
Iwakuni is situated in the easternmost part of Yamaguchi and on the west coast of the Aki-nada in the Seto-Inland Sea.
Iwakuni Castle was built by a warlord in the Kikkawa family early in the 17th century and then demolished under order of the Tokugawa Shogunate seven years later, but it was reconstructed in the middle of the 20th century.

Here is a little bit of history from the brochure:  "The first lord of Iwakuni, Hiroie Kikkawa, launched construction in 1601 of a castle atop the strategically important Mt. Shiroyama.

Of course, there are also things to see and do in Iwakuni, such as the Iwakuni Castle, the Kintai Bridge, and Cormorant Fishing.
This form of fishing is done at night, and consists of cormorants (fl birds, not seen but shown in the baskets in the front of the boats and on the yoke), as well as wood fires, which are lit in the iron basket you see on the back of each boat.

When we were leaving, we expected to return to the Nishi Hiroshima train station to return to Iwakuni, but she and her driver absoulutely insisted on taking us all the way back to the base.
The castle itself is a brief walk from the tram, on a path that curves around the top of the mountain.
There were a lot of Iwakuni artifacts on display, and the view from the top of the castle was great.

This was an interesting tour, and I'm glad we had the chance to see the Japanese side of this base, close up.
These stores are amazing; they are selling $600 pairs of jeans, as well as similarly overpriced jackets, shirts, etc. They seem to aim their merchandise at Americans, but I can't imagine WHO is stupid enough to pay those prices, when you can either buy at the exchange, or go to a Japanese store in town!!!
