After the second World War O'Sensei moved to a town called Iwama in the Ibaraki prefecture north of Tokyo.
Here he built his own dojo and small farm, and it was here that O'Sensei devoted himself to the development of Aikido as we see it now, and to his spiritual practice that had been so heavily influenced by the Omoto leader Onisaburu Deguchi.
The dojo, it's upkeep, and the preservation of O'Sensei's Aikido was entrusted to Saito who taught daily in Iwama, teaching thousands of students from across the globe.

I can empathise with the apparent situation Saito Sensei (Jnr) faced, it was his father after all whom the founder entrusted the Aiki Shrine and Iwama dojo too, I suppose the Aikikai have merely claimed back their 'property'.
Remember there is just as much bad Iwama schools out there as there is good Aikikai, and there are a lot of them.
There's nothing controversial about Iwama Ryu or Hitohiro Saito, unfortunately there are *some however who are less than diplomatic when they attempt to put their point of view over regarding the quality and origin of the Aikido taught at Iwama.

He had often said that "Budo and farming are one." The war had emptied the Kobukan, and he was tired of city life.
Leaving the Kobukan in the hands of his son Kisshomaru, he moved to the Ibaraki Prefecture and the village of Iwama.
Iwama is considered by many to be the birth place of modern-day Aikido, "the Way of Harmony." Prior to this move, his system had been called Aikijutsu, then Aiki-Budo, still primarily a martial art rather than a spiritual path.

Though I've never been to Iwama to train, I always listen when my teachers, who spent many years there during the 1970s, tell stories about Saito Sensei, the senior students like Shigemi Inagaki, and their own experiences of being Uchi Deshi in Iwama.
As the story goes, he had arrived at the Iwama dojo in 1972 after several months at Hombu Dojo in Tokyo, and he dressed and came out on the mat to take a class.

I visited Iwama from May 15 through 29, 1998, and got in some excellent training.
He was part of a group that stopped by the Iwama dojo for a visit several days later.
The big city north of Iwama is Mito, so it's better to ask for the train to Mito (if for any reason you have to ask).
