Iwama style is a name often used to describe the aikido in the lineage of Morihiro Saito, a close disciple of the founder of aikido Morihei Ueshiba for 23 years.
A major non-Aikikai branch is Iwama Shin Shin Aiki Shurenkai, headed by Saito's son Hitohiro Saito, and a now defunct Iwama style organisation was the Iwama Ryu.
Iwama practitioners often claim that their aikido is closest to that of the founder, as preserved by Morihiro Saito.

During Saito sensei’s period as a deshi he taught classes in the Iwama dojo, while some other of Ueshiba's students taught at the Aikikai Hombu.
When Ueshiba passed on, he gave Morihiro Saito the responsibility of carrying on the teaching at the Iwama dojo and also the position of caretaker of the Aiki Jinja located in Iwama.
For a period of time, some of Saito's student's in the West formed a network of dojos called Iwama Ryu and could choose to receive their grades directly from Saito rather than from the Aikikai.

Iwama Shin Shin Aiki Juku, which is another name Hitohiro sensei uses for his new organisation, where juku (also meaning high school) stands for a wider use of the principles of Aikido not only restricted to Budo.

I was training at the Aikikai Hombu Dojo in Tokyo at the time, and heard stories about this "outdoor dojo" in Iwama and a legendary sensei named Saito who was teaching the classes there.
The Iwama locals were the biggest targets in Japan for this kind of activity, and as the only long-term resident foreigner among the Iwama locals, I was the prime target.
In the dojo complex, Hitohiro's Yamabiko restaurant was replaced by Saito-sensei's new dojo, and there were some new artifacts in front of the shrine.

With the recommondation of Volker Stanzel, their sensei, they were allowed to visit Saito Sensei in Iwama in the year 1981.
The dojo moved from the Frankfurt Judo Club to the university clinic in 1990.
Besides Ute and Mark van Meerendonk in Schwickartshausen, other dojos sprang from the source of Frankfurt: Peter Heurich in Hanau, Achim Wichert in Frankfurt-Bockenheim, Usch and Andreas Wiemann in Bad Nauheim and Jörg Herwig and Gabi Gentschew in Sprendlingen.

In 1942 Master Morihei UESHIBA settled in Iwama, a little village about 100 km North-east of Tokyo, where he built his Dojo and sanctuary dedicated to Aikido (Aiki Jinja).

I still can hear the sound of his footsteps approaching the dojo from his house at Iwama which was not more than fifty meters away, in the early morning for the morning class.
The training and atmosphere at Iwama were not only different from what I had experienced at Hombu Dojo but very much the opposite.
Naturally, Iwama wasn't a popular place to be for Hombu uchideshi due not only to the challenges they had to encounter but also the intense daily duty as uchideshi.

I suppose you are right in that Iwama style (ryu) As long as is more a distinctive way of aikido practice as done at Iwama, particularly with regard to aiki weapons (you mention many of the instructors being proficient in traditional weapons styles).
Being chief instructor at another dojo is not a requirement for a `style' either: the many universities and schools that associate with Abe shihan's dojo and those run by his deshi in the Osaka area all go to Iwama for gasshuku to learn there.
The idea that Iwama style is not well immediately liked at the aiukikai HQ (`honbu', but there are many honbu of differernt styles) Though is not unique, as you probably know.

 Interview with Morihiro Saito Sensei - A background to Aikido
The Iwama dojo and the Aiki Shrine was left in Saito Sensei's care.
This and the Aikido the founder taught in Iwama is something Saito Sensei still today is preservering and teaching, not only in Iwama, the birthplace of Aikido, but all over the world.
I am particularly angry about that Hombu Dojo is trying to hide the fact that O-Sensei was an Iwama person and that it was during his time in Iwama Aikido was developed.
