		Hokkaido is bordered by the Sea of Japan on the west, the Sea of Okhotsk on the northeast, and the Pacific Ocean on the south and east.
		Hokkaido's geographic isolation was greatly diminished through the construction of the Seikan Tunnel, for the railway, in 1988, which connected Hokkaido with Honshu.
		Hokkaido Island is located at the north end of Japan, near Russia, and has coastlines on the Sea of Japan, the Sea of Okhotsk, and the Pacific Ocean.

	Sapporo Historical Village of Hokkaido
		They moved to Hokkaido as part of the Shizoku scheme (land in Hokkaido for former samurai who were stripped of their status and stipends during the Meiji period) and built their farmhouse in 1882 in the style typical of their ancestral lands to the south.
		It was initially thought that rice would not provide good yields in Hokkaido due to the climate, however the family were among the many beneficiaries of a new kind of rice which by 1887 had allowed full scale rice growing.

		The mean amylose contents for all varieties were 20.3% at Iwamizawa, 17.0% at Kurashiki, 21.9% in the phytotron maintained at 13-25 degrees and 18.7% at 23- 33 degrees, and showed a strong correlation (r=0.95, P<0.05) with temperature.
		It was estimated that a one-degree rise of temperature in ripening period would result in a decrease of 0.365% in amylose content.
