		Residents of a town near one of Japan's last whaling centres turned out on the weekend to try to rescue a whale that became stranded on their local beach, 300 km (190 miles) north of Tokyo.
		People of all ages gathered near the town of Iwanuma to try to comfort the eight-metre (25-foot) animal, believed to be a Bryde's whale, and push it back into deeper water.
		Iwanuma is not far from Ayukawa, one of Japan's few remaining whaling communities, which is struggling to survive after an international ban on commercial whaling was imposed in 1986.

		Beginning in March 2000, students from Iwanuma City have traveled to Dover to visit Central Middle School and to learn about the culture of the United States.
		We are visiting schools and yesterday, July 3, we met with the mayor of Iwanuma and also with the Lt. Governor of Miyagi (the prefecture or state that is home to Iwanuma- it is north of Tokyo).
		I hope that this is just the beginning of a true cultural exchange between Dover and Iwanuma as all students who took part have been transformed in some way.

		Cook was selected as the CAP representative from California and made the trip to Japan along with two cadets from Alaska, one from Washington and one from Nevada.
