If the political economy of Tokugawa Japan was dominated by the feudal system based on powerful domains and castle-towns inhabited by daimyo, their samurai and licensed craft guilds, why did the population of so many castle-towns decline, and the population of the surrounding rural hinterland increase, in the C18th and early C19th?
* Castle-town populations were subtracted from the population of their home provinces when the former were large and underwent significant change between the comparison dates.
