Search Engines: Ixquick, a multi search engine with a difference, Ariadne Issue 23
Ixquick however does not exhibit this problem; it understands which certain engines will understand which syntax, and translates and forwards the search only to those search engines which will properly understand and respond to them.
Ixquick looks at the results that are returned by the various search engines, and it awards each page a star for any search engine that placed that site in its own top ten.
I don't quite understand why Ixquick are using this approach, since I think it slightly weakens their overall success and in the area of news information it just doesn't seem to work.

A: Ixquick is a made-up name, but the 'quick' alludes to the speed of the metasearch.
Ixquick's top results are consensus picks: irrelevant results may fool one engine or even two engines, but are unlikely to fool lots of engines.
Ixquick's results are also more comprehensive: if a hard-to-find result is only available to one of the twelve engines, Ixquick can find it.

Tornado Insider - News - Ixquick: a Metaengine Searching for Revenues   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-11-02)
Ixquick was invented by an American student, and taken over in September 2000 by the Dutch group Surfboard Holding, through the acquisition, for just under $10 million, of the US company Startpage.com.
Not by chance, Ixquick’s business model follows that of Google, the most successful search engine on the web, which attains at least half of its revenues, estimated at around $50 million in 2002, from advertising.
But the Google’s success in online advertising is owed to a controversial system: advertisers are allowed to place their products at the top of the search results, simply by acquiring a series of key words which they link to the name of their company, at a price varying between $0.15 and 0.8.
