It is a book of Iyanifa Alcamo true experience within the Lukumí and Yoruba practice and the anomalies she had experienced.
Iyanifa Alcamo really reveals just a few of the abnormalities, and I can say that there is quite a bit more than what she exposes in this book.

Orunmila - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Although Orunmila is not actually Ifa, the close association exists, because he is the one who leads the priesthood of Ifa.
Priests of Ifa are called babalawo (father of secrets) or Iyanifa (female Ifa priest).
Among West Africans, Orunmila is recognized as a deified Ancestor that was present both at the beginning of Creation and then again amongst them as a prophet that taught an advanced form of spiritual knowledge and ethics.

The book could have used a more in-depth discussion about how certain forms of discipline could be either nurturing (positive/ encouraging growth) or abusive (negative/ hampering growth) depending upon context, vs. those forms of discipline that are just plain abusive.
In spite of this shortcoming, I applaud Iyanifa Alcamo for bringing the difficult issue of egocentric and abusive mentors to the forefront and contrasting this with the positive side of the religion.
