Izamal remains a place of pilgrimage within Yucatán, now for the veneration of (The Christian Church based in the Vatican and presided over by a pope and an episcopal hierarchy) Roman Catholic (A person who has died and has been declared a saint by canonization) saints.
Izamal was the first chair of the (A clergyman having spiritual and administrative authority; appointed in Christian churches to oversee priests or ministers; considered in some churches to be successors of the twelve apostles of Christ) Bishops of Yucatán before they were moved to Merida.
The town of Izamal was first granted the status of (A large and densely populated urban area; may include several independent administrative districts) city by the government of Yucatán on 4 December, 1841.

Traveling north from Izamal are a couple of secondary roads, poorly marked but both eventually ending up at the top of the peninsula in Dzilam de Bravo, that is if you make the correct turns (always an adventure).
If you were coming from Merida there is also an east/west coastal road from the Mexican port town of Progresso but this is closed due to erosion from last year's hurricane "Isidore".
From Izamal the towns you pass through are all small with the customary "zocalo" town square and 16th century Catholic church.
