Izapa, Chiapas, Mexico Tour Or Travel Pictures And Photos
Izapa changed from simple village life to geing a civic-religious center sometime about 850 to 300 B.C. Group B Complex still remained the center of the town, but at this time the large platform mounds rose around the plaza.
Izapa's role as an outpost town became increasingly more important since to the east of town the early stages of the Mayan Civilization along the Pacific Coast of Guatemala and into Kaminaljuyu known today as Guatemala City began to show their influence into the area.
Izapa was the dominant civic center of the Soconusco region and evidence of Izapa's Long Lipped God shows its influence clear into Kaminaljuyu the early Maya city located under present day Guatemala City in Guatemala.

The Izapa Culture A Mesoamerican Tree of Life :: Lamanite Generation
Izapa is without doubt one of the largest ruins known on the Pacific Coast of North or Central America, lying as it does within a very productive, well-populated region where communications are good.
Izapa is an ancient ceremonial center first settled in Early Preclassic times -- perhaps as early as 1500 BC (Ekholm 1969).
The narrative portrayed on the surface of the stone is quite complex, and proved to be a tremendous challenge to Norman as he struggled to unravel its message.

It is clear that Stela No.5, from Izapa not only indicates the tree of life, it also confirms the tradition recorded by Friar Diego de Landa that the Olmec people made twelve migrations to the New World.
Stelea no.21,from Izapa also record the decline of the Olmec nama and kuno religions and probable raise of the Maya speakers and the sa (serpent) cult which called forhuman sacrifice.

Those that suggest that the descendants of Lehi did not occupy the region round about Izapa and those which would lead him to believe that the people would not necessarily have had any knowledge of the prophesy at the time of the stones carving hundreds of years later.
...The question which should really be asked about Izapa Stela 5 is 'Did the artist or artists have Lehi's vision in their minds when the stone was sculptured?', a question which, I submit, cannot be answered short of talking with the artist.

Izapa is unique in that it is a very large site with many stela.
As is true for any archaeological find, the accuracy of that initial assessment of the stone dubbed Izapa Stela 5 will either stand or begin to fall in light of further evidence and study, though a definitive determination regarding the stela may simply not be possible.
A report made by the field director had this to say about Izapa: Izapa is without doubt one of the largest ruins known on the Pacific Coast of North or Central America, lying as it does within a very productive, well-populated region where communications are good.

Izapa Cosmology, 2012, and the Mayan Calendar
Generally, this monument—as well as many others from Izapa; e.g., Stela 11— indicate an interest in the Milky Way, the dark-rift in the Milky Way (the mouth is the dark-rift), and the Big Dipper.
This indicates to the viewer two things: the former god, now defeated, and the new god, newly “victorious” or newly “born.” This scene relates to the Creation myth wherein the hero twins must defeat the vain, false ruler of the previous world age, Seven Macaw, before their father, One Hunahpu, can be reborn.
What I have attempted to do is interpret the iconography of these monuments based upon the horizon astronomy toward which they are oriented and which they were apparently intended to encode.

According to my reading, a dialectic exists in Izapa sculpture that sets astronomical events occurring in "the north" (the rise and set of Ursa Major over Tacana) in opposition to events in "the south" (the convergence of the December solstice sun with the Milky Way, tracked over the December solstice horizon).

Stela 5 at Izapa   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-10)
To this day, Stela 5 of Izapa is considered by many to be the most significant discovery in relationship to the Book of Mormon.
This inclusion of apparently actual persons in the scene discussing the symbolic tree suggests, of course, that this divergent Izapa representation of the Tree of Life was an attempt on the part of the ancient artists of Izapa to portray some actual event featuring that holy tree.
The circumstantial evidence of the mighty realities behind the symbols on Stela 5 is that Jesus is the Christ and that, in our journey through life, we may inherit eternal life by adhering to the teachings and the ordinances of the gospel of Jesus Christ.

 Izapa Stela 5
The Izapa Stela 5 (hereafter IS5) is regarded by some popular Mormon apologists as a convincing proof of the Book of Mormon's authenticity.
The original analysis of Izapa Stela 5 is M. Wells Jakeman, "An Unusual Tree of Life Sculpture from Ancient Central America," Bulletin of the University Archaeological Society 4 (1953): 26-49; and M. Wells Jakeman, The Complex "Tree-of-Life" Carving on Izapa Stela 5: A Reanalysis and Partial Interpretation (Provo, UT: Brigham Young University, 1958).
IS5, among the stela at Izapa, is "the most complex scene" in the collection, and perhaps in all of North America from before Christ.
