  Sabine Zlatin
Sabine Zlatin was the founder and superintendent of the Izieu children's home and the founder-president of the Musée-mémorial des enfants d'Izieu.
Sabine was temporarily away from Izieu when Klaus Barbie and the Nazis took the children away to their deaths but she lived to testify against Barbie when he was tried in 1987.
The house which was home to the Izieu children and the adults in charge of them perpetuates their memory.

Izieu is a smalll village upon an arm of the Rhone river on the boundary of three French departments: the Ain, the Isere and Savoie.
Little by little the house filled, and the number of children continuously increased until September 1943, when there were sixty-four children to divide between the dormitories of the first floor and the annex building where the eldest slept.
In September 1943, following the invasion of the Italian zone by the Wehrmacht, Izieu again was in danger, and some parents managed to collect their children and flee.

The children's home in Izieu was opened in April 1943 to serve as a refuge for Jewish children threatened with arrest and deportation during the German occupation of France.
It was established in an empty farm house in a remote mountain village overlooking the Rhone River valley, by the former Red Cross nurse, Sabina Zlatin, who co-directed the home with her husband Miron.
The original group of children that lived in the Izieu home were transferred from the Palavas-les-Flots OSE center and the Campestre à Lodève home (both in the Hérault), which had recently been closed.

When the Germans occupied the rest of the France in 1943, Zlatin took 17 children with her to Italian occupation zone.
However, on April 6, 1944, the Lyon Gestapo, led by Klaus Barbie, raided the house and took away all forty-four of the children and the seven adults who took care of them.
The same year she founded an association to create a museum for the Izieu victims.

The museum organizes temporary exhibitions that are presented at the Museum and elsewhere (in Poland and abroad) in order to educate the public about the Nazi occupation.
