In the 14th year of the Meiji Restoration, Kutero (Or Kyutaro) Tateno was born in Izumi City, Kagoshima, Japan, on February 24, 1881, to Kuzaemon Tateno and Yae Idenoue.
Izumi City is a small town just a few miles from the sea, and about 30 miles from Kagoshima, the Prefecture Capitol.
On May 7, 1904, Kutaro changes his surname from "Tateno" to "Nishimuta." While it was common for only the oldest son to keep the family name, we are unsure why he chose this name, although it appears to be a name which was near extinction.

Twenty-one persons were killed, and 18 houses destroyed by this flow which, due to heavy rainfall of 356 mm on the day before, recorded at the Izumi sewage purification center, caused a massive landslide of a sediment volume of 160,000 m
The slope on which the landslide occurred originally had an average angle of 26 degrees, which is not very steep, and the catchment area of the slope apparently was not large enough to hold a large volume of water.
Half of the sediment volume of the landslide was estimated to be caught by the sabo dam and half discharged from the dam (Kagoshima Prefectural Government, 1997).

A bronze statue of a kamikaze pilot stands on a 15-foot concrete arch with a plaque that says "Distant South." The statue is located at the Tokko Jinja (Special Attack Corps Shrine) at the former Izumi Naval Air Base in Kagoshima Prefecture.
This jinja (Shinto shrine) was built for the protecting gods of the Izumi Naval Air Corps established on April 1943.
During World War II in order to protect our country Japan, over 100 brave young men who were training as part of the Izumi Second Naval Air Corps met heroic deaths in action at Izumi Naval Air Base on April 17 and 18, 1945.

 Birdwatching Trip Report from South Korea and Japan
Flew into Kagoshima from Seoul/Incheon and picked up rental car about midday.  This was an unexpectedly early arrival so I used the extra half-day to go for the regular wintering Greater Spotted Eagle at Takae- an area of rice fields west of Sendai. 
The forest on the crater floor contained lot of dead wood and early morning woodpecker activity was intense- extended views of a pair of White-backed Woodpeckers and also Japanese Green Woodpeckers.  Also, bafflingly, there was some exceptionally loud woodpecker drumming from the west ridge of the crater.
1 at Izumi and one offshore from Oarai-Tomakomai ferry.

One day, I walked from the train station at Izumi to Asia's most important wintering grounds for cranes at Arasaki.
One day, I took a small ferry across the straits to Shimonoseki to visit a wholesale fish market, known for certain specialties, including slipper lobsters and a puffer fish that is called fugu in English.
