Afire with faith - The Boston Globe
Mahoney's best-known rescue was not of a person, but of the five Torah scrolls of Temple Tifereth Israel in Everett, which was destroyed by fire in 1982.
Mahoney and others at the scene braved thick smoke to enter the sanctuary, and a backdraft knocked them to the ground as they reached the ark where the Torahs were kept.
Mahoney almost missed the dedication, where access was tightly controlled due to the hosts of political leaders present and the hypersensitive post-9/11 security environment.

Intercollegiate Studies Institute - ISI Books - Bertrand de Jouvenel
Mahoney explores Jouvenel’s affinities with and debts to Aristotle, Burke, Rousseau, and Tocqueville, and he contrasts Jouvenel’s signal theoretical achievements with the twists and turns manifested in his (sometimes questionable) practical political engagements from the 1930s until his death.
Mahoney's characteristically engaging appraisal of this important political philosopher, the fifth entry in ISI Books' Library of Modern Thinkers series, is the first book on Jouvenel to appear in the English language.
"Daniel Mahoney has done a brilliant job of bringing to life the 'conservative liberalism' of Jouvenel…Especially valuable is the discussion of the idea of sovereignty in political life, and of the limits and possibilites of politics itself.

Aleksandr Solzhenitsyn: The Ascent from Ideology [Book Review]   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-30)
As Mahoney points out, "Contemporary intellectuals and journalists will not tolerate any serious challenge to the enlightenment or progressivist assumptions underlying modern liberty." What he means is that Western intellectuals are intolerant because they are hardly aware of decent alternatives to the secular theories of freedom and rights flowing from the Enlightenment.
Mahoney begins by arguing that the most reliable statement of Solzhenitsyn’s political views is not the sensational Harvard Address of 1978 but rather the largely ignored Liechtenstein Address of 1993.
Citing Solzhenitsyn’s prose poems, Mahoney shows that Solzhenitsyn’s loftiest theme is the soul’s encounter with eternity in experiencing the grandeur of Nature (a reflection of Solzhenitsyn’s "green" side) and in listening to the haunting beauty of church bells ringing in the countryside, reminding mortal men of their heavenly home.

H-Net Review: Kim Munholland on De Gaulle: Statesmanship, Grandeur and Modern Democracy
Mahoney cites de Gaulle's wartime speech to the Cercle Français at Oxford University on November 25, 1941, as a classic Gaullist critique of totalitarianism and fascism.
De Gaulle emerges from Mahoney's account as a man of action, but one who is restrained by moral concerns and whose writings reveal a political moralist in the same sense that Raymond Aron or de Tocqueville were commentators on modern democracy and on the modern, human condition.
Mahoney argues that the legacy of Gaullism may very well be a reconciliation of the Old Regime with the revolutionary legacy to produce Francois Furet's "republic of the center," but it is also a warning against complacency and a loss of spiritual values amid the pursuit of pleasure in modern democracy.
