The Thornycroft Type J lorry   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-02)
Although the J was originally built for a load capacity of 3.4 tons (3,454kg) and powered by a 30bhp engine, by 1919 capacity had risen to 4 tons (4,064kg) and power came from the massive 40hp T-head M/4 engine of 6,256cc whose four in-line cylinders were cast in two separate blocks.
Thornycroft did not pursue the idea and continued producing petrol-driven lorries; however the use of vehicles converted to run on gas re-surfaced during WW2, when petrol was in short supply.
Thornycroft's Type J 4 tonner (4,064kg) faced competition from several British firms.

Thornycroft had recognised that locomotive boilers were not good enough for the necessary increase in power and pressures, which led to dangerous leaks of steam.
Thornycroft designed a special light weight water tube boiler which was used in two fast ships of only 185 ft, H.M.S.Daring and H.M.S. Decoy.
However, there are many people living today who can remember when the Thornycroft company, despite its mainstream nautical activities, was once a notable manufacturer of commercial and military vehicles - a time when Thornycroft vehicles could be seen going about their daily duties as a matter of routine.

J. Thornycroft Ltd came into being around 1905, although the company had been producing lorries from around 1898.
Of the various Thornycroft vehicles perhaps the most famous are the 'J' type produced from 1913 to 1927, and the Mighty Antar.
There are not many Thornycroft vehicles modelled, although most collectors will be aware of the Mighty Antar from Dinky Toys, while the 'J' type really started the new wave of Corgi Classics and from 1985 this was to appear in a multitude of liveries as a van, truck and bus.
