To honor the sonic legacy of alt/indie rock founding father J Mascis, Fender is supremely psyched to unveil the sparkling-new J Mascis Jazzmaster®; guitar.
Mascis took the instrument to a new place with his feedback-drenched, distortion-laden band, Dinosaur Jr.
Available beginning in July 2007, the J Mascis Jazzmaster is literally a sparkling new addition to the Fender lineup, in celebration of the adventurous and continuing sonic contributions of the man who has been the model’s constant champion for nearly 25 years now.

 J Mascis
J Mascis's emotions have always been at least as muddy as his guitar sound; they've just never been nearly as loud in the mix.
Because Mascis probably didn't have to bring his Martin acoustic out of the bedroom for a solo club tour to figure out that somehow the alterna-grunge revolution had left him, one of its early leaders, behind -- that someone, to be blunt, had blown it.
But unlike Bob, who's always used frustration as an effective muse, or Paul, who seems to be comfortably settling in to the older-and-wiser pro-songwriter routine, J managed to keep a big wall of distortion between himself and his doubts until he hit the road alone last year.

  J. Mascis & the Fog: More Light (2000): Reviews
Which is funny, because aside from sounding the most excited and invigorated he has in years, J Mascis does little different on More Light.
The solo J. has all the heartfelt keening of Where You Been-era Dinosaur, but with a fresh approach to his trademark blending of powerchords and melodies.
The good thing with Mascis is that, even without straying in the least from his recognizable sound, he can maintain some degree of unpredictability in his songs.

J Mascis + The Wounded Knees @ Bush Hall, London | live music reviews | musicOMH.com
The first time I ever saw J Mascis live was on the Rollercoaster tour in 1992 - a bill comprising of three premier noise specialists - My Bloody Valentine, The Jesus and Mary Chain, Dinosaur Jr - and er, Blur.
So perhaps it is fitting that the second time I see J Mascis live, he's supported by The Wounded Knees - a duo who manage to create an impressive wall of sound with their flute, guitar and vocal combination.
While everyone recovers their hearing, J comes back for a crowd-pleasing encore of Wagon and Just Like Heaven, proving once again that it's the tunes which make the man so special, not just the fact that he practically invented grunge.

Enough people know J Mascis is God that a number of websites trade bootlegs of his live shows and keep track of the set lists--and it's not all because they are unequivocally devoted to J's back catalogue of Dinosaur Jr.

 J Mascis (Dinosaur Jr) | interviews | musicOMH.com
Mascis is notoriously hard to interview and "laconic" - dictionary definition, "using a minimum of words; concise to the point of rudeness" - is a word that seems to follow him around like "flamboyant" did with Liberace.
Mascis' blistering guitar solos were one of the highlights of Dinosaur Jr's records, a feature (still) unique among non-heavy rock bands, and something which was responsible for drawing together indie, alternative and metal fans in admiration.
One possible reason for Mascis not getting many more press invitations to shop for $1000 suits is that, in contrast to the relentless gigging ethic of his peers, Mascis had a reputation for not liking touring.

Mascis was also an occasional producer and film composer.
The group temporarily disbanded in 1989, largely to allow the legendarily non-communicative singer the opportunity to dismiss bassist Lou Barlow, who went on to form Sebadoh; in the meantime, Mascis sat in on drums with a series of bands, among them the Velvet Monkeys and GobbleHoof, even producing the latter's eponymous 1990 LP.

 J MASCIS
J Mascis gets my vote as the most unlikely rock star to come out of the grunge era.
Not cute, not especially charismatic, prone to random guitar solos and blessed with a haphazard approach to songwriting and recording, he was a gifted oddball who came along at a time when somebody forgot to lock the gifted oddballs out of the club.
From the sound of things, Mascis hasn’t gotten any more self-assured over the years: At least half the songs on More Light (Ultimatum/Artemis) — credited to J Mascis + the Fog, though it amounts to a new Dinosaur Jr.

Which, come to think of it, perhaps Mascis should have done as well.

But the prevalent opinion was that the prime mover of grunge was Dinosaur Jr's J Mascis, the singer/ songwriter/guitarist who had melded Neil Young's countrified twang with Sonic Youth's megadistortion, adding his own punkified hardcore twist along the way.
And despite the keen pop melodic sense of his songs, Mascis' hoarse hiccoughy vocals seemed as if they were recorded on the very first take, at the instant of their ideation.

J Mascis has been in the business of making music for more than 20 years and is still considered one of the most influential musicians of contemporary rock 'n' roll.
Nonetheless, Mascis is going ahead with a planned tour in support of his new album ''Free So Free,'' which brings him to the 40 Watt Club on Tuesday night.

J will back in the UK in December with his new band the Fog, and should be well worth your attention.

J Mascis has a reputation for being many things: the eccentric musical genius behind Dinosaur Jr; the man with the tempestuous relationship with Sebadoh’s Lou Barlow; the plaid-pants-wearing golf pro in MTV’s Buzz Bin in Dino’s "Feel the Pain" video.
Yet Mascis didn’t limit himself to straightforward acoustic-guitar arrangements.
On the show-ending "Quest," from his debut album, Dinosaur (Homestead), Mascis howled with electrified anguish and a grinding passion; it all sounded as fresh today as it did in 1985.

Proving that he was as much a pioneer in the '80s rock scene as the Stooges were in the early '70s, the stringy-haired songwriting savant -- credited as the first to make metalesque guitar wankery fashionable in indie rock -- was in top form with his haphazard grandstand solos and ear-bleeding distortion.
For those who arrived early enough to catch the lo-fi rock openers, Mascis gave the duo a boost on drums for a couple of songs, and Watt also lent a hand on bass for their finale.

Things haven't changed much for J in the last decade or so: Keyboards and sound effects come and go, but it's still down to his skidding drums, roving bass and luminous, brilliant guitar playing.
Vocally Mascis is still found in full slacker territory with his whiny, nasal style having changed not one bit from his Dinosaur Jr days.

Despite this difficulty, the first reunion show, on April 16 at Hollywood’s Spaceland, went “pretty good.” Despite that, Mascis says he’s still “not quite convinced” the reunion is such a great idea, although there seems to be one thing about the experience that interests him: nostalgia.

 BasementLife Interview with J Mascis
Mascis signed to Time Warner owned Blanco y Negro records and they were stuffing the pockets of glossy magazines trying to convince the baggy panted brethren that there was more to music than pre-for whom the shotgun blows Nirvana, and that, God dammit, this slacker was going to be a contender for the Cobain reign.
Despite the characterizations of God and genius like guitar playing, there was one inherent problem: J Mascis was never meant to be a rock star.
Public relations companies being what they are, asked Mascis to speak to the media again and we caught up with J just weeks before he heads out to support his latest release, which continues his trademarked rot-gut feedback guitar solos and rock solid compositions.

J not only established the group, but was also the primary songwriter, drummer, guitarist, and lead vocalist for the band.
Mascis disbanded Dinosaur Jr sometime in the mid-Nineties (it seems few know exactly the date - including the band members) but has continued to force his aural explosion on the Universe.
Always the rock-and-roll bundle of furious tonal energy (and rarely the balladeer), J is still on top of his game - whether it is his choppy, glass-in-the-throat vocal stylings, his wickedly spastic yet super-solid drumming, or his headless-chicken approach to lead guitar.
