J Mascis - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
J Mascis is an American musician, probably best-known as the singer, guitarist and songwriter for Dinosaur Jr.
He then went on to produce albums with his new band, J Mascis and the Fog starting in 2000.
In April of 2005, Mascis rejoined with Barlow and Murph, as the original trio of Dinosaur Jr., to begin a tour celebrating the re-release of the group's first three albums.

Mike Watt - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
In 2000, Watt was asked by J Mascis to participate in a world tour behind Mascis' first post-Dinosaur Jr.
Watt feared that he would have to temporairily shelve the bass in July 2005 when a crack was discovered in its headstock during a 2005 Stooges European tour; fortunately, he was able to have the instrument repaired in time for the next leg of the tour.
During his stint with J Mascis and The Fog he used Dean Markey strings on occasion since Mascis was an endorser of that brand and thus could obtain bass strings for Watt free of charge.

On those albums, Mascis seemed to be weighed down by the size of his own legend and unsure of where the music should be going.
The songs often included bloated string arrangements, and J Mascis sounded like he was just going through the motions most of the time.
Yet, Mascis redeemed himself in the eyes of many of these fans with the release of 2000's More Light, which showed him awakening from the prehistoric slumbers that marred those last records and recording under the new name, J Mascis + The Fog.

Stripping down Dinosaur Jr's songs to their bare essentials reveals the incredible ability of J's guitar talent and reveals a heart of pure mellow acoustic gold behind the more complex and distorted arrangements to be found on most Dinosaur Jr.
Mascis' stroke of genius lies in his focused, passionate and heartfelt delivery of his songs which are revealed to be masterpieces in their own right.
Overall, the sparse acoustic format is a triumph for J Mascis, producing a rich, rewarding sound and is definately recommended for Dinosaur Jr.

J Mascis + The Fog: Free So Free: Pitchfork Review   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-09)
Once Uma hit it big, J was rudderless, running through chords he knew by heart; at the pit of his melancholy, he recorded "Feel The Pain", which repeats the mantra "I feel the pain of everyone/ Then I feel nothing" over and over.
Mascis was propped up by Kevin Shields, whose shoulder he cried on through the mid and late 90s; though Sonic Youth wrote their biggest hit "Teenage Riot" about J after Lee Renaldo played on "Little Fury Things", they were enjoying massive major label support for their grunge-era material and had no time to help.
The former is a bitter, sarcastic indictment of her decision to pursue celebrity; the latter pair hark back to the twisted misery of Dinosaur Jr.'s earliest material, when J still held on to hope that Uma would come walking back through the door.

J will back in the UK in December with his new band the Fog, and should be well worth your attention.

The songwriting comes so naturally, some of the trax sound a little shambolic and his voice ident the same weedy Neil Young instrument that it always was, but these songs contain a certain charm, which has been sadly lacking for a while.

J Mascis stayed holed-up in his Amherst studio, stubbornly true to his project of crafting a post-Neil Young vision of punk rock, and Dinosaur Jr fizzled out.
Buoyed by the lethargy embodied in his laconic vocal delivery and tossed-off solos-- the qualities that distinguished Mascis as the godfather of slacker rock-- this album sounds nothing short of triumphant.
Which is funny, because aside from sounding the most excited and invigorated he has in years, J Mascis does little different on More Light.

It might be a joke on his own absent-minded image, but nonetheless his solo band is called The Fog, and J Mascis - who with Dinosaur Jr opened up the world for the grunge revolution and then decided to skip the party - has no idea what the members actually did.
For the record the bare facts are as follows - basically the work of J alone, it features the vocals of Guided By Voices' Bob Pollard, and the guitar of Kevin Shields.
J, however, doesn't know exactly what Shields did but, as swathes of this album feature oodles of FX scree (especially the brute propulsive title track), he could appear on just about anything.

Proving that he was as much a pioneer in the '80s rock scene as the Stooges were in the early '70s, the stringy-haired songwriting savant -- credited as the first to make metalesque guitar wankery fashionable in indie rock -- was in top form with his haphazard grandstand solos and ear-bleeding distortion.
For those who arrived early enough to catch the lo-fi rock openers, Mascis gave the duo a boost on drums for a couple of songs, and Watt also lent a hand on bass for their finale.
