Topic: J rg Haider

  Haider’s Anti-Semitism
Haider, born after the war to parents who were both ardent Nazis, identifies deeply with his parents and their generation, and sees them as victims.
Haider’s antisemitism is strongly connected to his view of the Holocaust and his coping with responsibility to the Holocaust.
Haider’s thinking was shaped by stories of his parents’ suffering after the war, when his father was imprisoned in Glasenbach, which Haider’s mother, in an interview to the Austrian weekly Profil (23 May 1995) referred to as “dieses KZ —this concentration camp.

In her 1999 biography of Haider, Light and Shadows of a Career, Christa Zöchling describes how when the young lawyer first decided he wanted to become a politician, he would tour the country with a suitcase full of costumes from which he would pick and choose appropriate items according to who his audience was.
Peter Westenthaler, head of an FP faction, who recently complained Haider was not allowing the party to walk on its own ("it takes two steps forward, and he yanks it back by its braces"), was forced to apologise.
Haider is certainly doing nothing to make himself more socially acceptable and thus more suitable as a chancellor candidate - his lifelong dream.

Jörg Haider - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Haider proclaimed that his move was just the fulfillment of his promise to Carinthian FPÖ voters he gave prior to the Carinthian election that had been held in the same year (see[10]).
Haider is commonly labelled a far-right politician and is often put in the same corner as Jean-Marie Le Pen, Belgium's Flemish Block or Switzerland's Christoph Blocher outside Austria.
Haider has been foremost a critic of Austrian politics since he began his political career in the 1970s, using simple sentences and logic to point at issues the general public perceived as unjust or self-motivated politics of the big parties politics the Austrian Social Democrats and the Austrian People's party (see [12]).

The stunning breakthrough of Haider was won in the face of opposition from anti-populist leaders around the world.
Haider has long been reviled in the press for his refusal to condemn the role played by Germany, its armed forces and leaders, in World War II.
The only sane reaction to Haider's victory came from the French populist leader Jean-Marie Le Pen, who reminded his strident European colleagues that Haider "democratically won almost 30 percent of the vote and, according to elementary rules of democracy, should be able to take part in a coalition government."

Sanctions on Austria's Freedom Party premature - Minnesota Daily
Although the Freedom Party might not be the true victors of last October's elections after their second-place finish, their coalition with the People's Party does reflect the determination of the Austrian people, which the EU is bound by its own principles to recognize.
Indeed, even Haider -- in an effort to appease his critics -- has denounced Austria's Nazi past, apologized for his past comments about the SS -- A Nazi paramilitary organization -- assured Austrian Jews that his party poses no threat to their position in Austrian society.
Although active discouragement appears inappropriate at this time, Haider's party and its role in the new coalition government deserve the scrutiny that it has and will continue to receive from the EU and other international organizations.

It is the year the short-lived experiment of a Social Democratic-Liberal coalition government failed, and the reform-oriented party leadership of the Austrian Freedom Party was eliminated by a putsch on the part of its right-wing opponent J?rg Haider.
Chancellor Vranitzky, a former banker whom Franz-Josef Murau in Ausl?schung harshly attacks as an uninspired technocrat in the coat of socialism, proclaimed Haider’s „Ausgrenzung“, or exclusion, because of some evidence of his alliance with ex-National Socialists inside the Freedom Party’s networks.
In 1989, after a spectacular electoral success in Carinthia, the national-Catholic faction of the Conservative Party there made Haider Governor of the federal state, only to turn him out again after his reference to „the proper employment policy“ of the Nazi regime.

Both countries’ governments wanted strict control over their own national borders, and on this issue Haider noted that, “If Blair is not extreme, then nor is Haider”, for “the latter is arguably less tough on asylum seekers and immigrants than Labour and Blair!”
